Another day, another Philadelphia Eagles cornerback is set to be released.

Just one day after reports came out that cornerback Darius Slay is being released, ESPN Senior NFL Reporter Jeremy Fowler has reported the Eagles now plan to release former all-pro cornerback James Bradberry as well when the new league year begins. Bradberry will be a post-June-1 cut, saving the Eagles $2.1 million in cap space.

The Eagles signed Bradberry back in May of 2022 after the New York Giants released the corner after failing to find a trade partner. Philadelphia then signed him to a one-year $7.25 million contract to help lock down the Eagles’ secondary, with cornerback Darius Slay playing on the opposite side.

In his first year in Philadelphia, Bradberry shined, as he started all 17 games and finished with 44 total tackles, three interceptions, and 17 passes defended. That was good enough for him to be named a second-team all-pro selection for that year. That fantastic season helped the Eagles get an NFC championship win and an appearance in Super Bowl LVII

However, in the Super Bowl, Bradberry was infamous in that game for drawing a controversial holding on Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster, which allowed the Chiefs to pick up the victory. After the season, Bradberry resigned with the Eagles on a three-year, $38.00 million contract extension.

Bradberry’s second year in Philadelphia wasn’t as great, however. He finished with 54 total tackles (39 solo), one interception, 13 passes defended, and one forced fumble, in 16 starts on the season, but throughout the year, Bradberry had become the center of a failing Eagles defense. During multiple games, teams targeted Bradberry as he had seemed like he’d lost a step in his game.

After a poor season, the Eagles decided not to release Bradberry in the offseason, and reports came out that he’d likely have to switch to playing safety if he wanted to remain with the Eagles. However, just before the season began, Bradberry suffered a leg injury in practice and was placed on injured reserve on August 29, 2024. He ended up missing the entire 2024 season, and it later came out that Bradberry suffered a torn Achilles.

Bradberry recently said that he still wants to play cornerback next season, although it will likely be with another team.
