How Jonathan Greenard’s Injury Uncertainty Could Impact the Eagles

During the draft, the Eagles made a splash of a move by trading for star pass rusher Jonathan Greenard with the Minnesota Vikings and signing him to a four-year, $100 million contract, with $50 million guaranteed.
Greenard, a one-time Pro Bowler, has recorded almost 30 sacks over the last three seasons, with 2025 being a down year due to injury. Nevertheless, this move was a massive one for the Eagles, as they got a new pass rusher to replace the hole that Jaelan Phillips was brought in to fill.
However, now almost five months later, Greenard’s health and lack of participation in training camps have become worrisome. Now, with the season opener just days away, Greenard’s status for Week 1 is in question.
Nick Sirianni says Greenard has “worked his butt off” to play on Sunday against the Washington Commanders, but “we’ll see how that goes.”
Greenard has been dealing with a pectoral injury, which has caused him to miss all of training camp, yet now, with the season days away, he is showing signs of life. Greenard returned to practice Wednesday on limited reps, but a return nonetheless. This reappearance shines light on the potential for a debut in Week 1, but as of now, he is still questionable.
“It’s day by day,” Vic Fangio said Thursday. “He’s getting up to speed. We’ll see.”
Greenard’s questionability is a major difference-maker against Washington. Greenard stands out as one of the most explosive pass-rushers in the NFL. On top of that, Greenard will be feasting as the defensive end next to two of the quickest nose tackles in the NFL, Jordan Davis and Jalen Carter. So, Greenard’s addition creates an extremely strong and explosive defensive line that can beat opposing offenses with both their bodies and their legs.
Greenard has seen his best action as a pure pass-rusher, recording 34 sacks in 52 games when put into this role. On top of this, his teams tend to benefit from his support on the field. More specifically, with the Minnesota Vikings, his arrival contributed to the Vikings moving from a mid-tier defense by measure of points allowed in 2023 to a top-seven defense consistently in the following two seasons. Now, Greenard is moving to a defense that is already one of the top units and is given a stellar cast to perform with.
Greenard being a wild card for Week 1 puts a heavy swing on the chemistry of the defensive line. In 2025, there was a clear trend that correlated strong pass-rusher play with fewer points per game. So, Greenard’s health could be the swing of almost a touchdown per game, much like Phillips was in 2025.
