Round 2: Phillies vs. Braves Series Preview, September 11-13

The 2026 Phillies season has come a long way, and now the home stretch of games begins. For the Phils, it’s against the familiar foe, the Atlanta Braves, who were just in Philly over Labor Day weekend.

Since Labor Day, the Phillies battled the Houston Astros at Citizens Bank Park in a three-game set, while the Braves went home for a three-game series against the top team in the American League, the Tampa Bay Rays.

Both teams, after splitting the Labor Day series against each other, struggled against their next opponents. The Phillies dropped two of three against Houston, the opener and rubber-match finale. Atlanta dropped the first two and salvaged a Game 3 victory.

The Phillies series was ugly. Stupid mistakes and underperformances caused what could have been a valuable series to get closer to Atlanta in the divisional race into a frustrating series loss. For Atlanta, these weren’t ugly losses saved by the bell, dropping the opener 7-1, then the second matchup 7-2.

Both sides are back to where they started just a week ago, a four-game difference and a weekend matchup, the only difference being neither team is hot, and it’s a three-game set, so Atlanta gets to hold onto the division lead longer no matter the outcome of this series.

Labor Day Rerun

The stakes were high a week ago. The Phillies were coming off their best month of the season, going 21-7, and jumped their way back into the conversation as one of baseball’s best teams. Not only that, they brought the division race back down to only a four-game lead for Atlanta, with a four-game set between the two teams coming up.

Now a week later, it’s a sequel to this high-stakes battle. Some different variables: both sides coming in cold after an up-and-down week. It’s also only a three-game set, so Atlanta holds the lead no matter the outcome. This one is also at Truist Field in Atlanta.

However, this has become arguably the most important series of the season for both sides. If the Braves take the series, even if it is just two out of three, the division lead goes up to five games. At that stage, Atlanta just has to survive the next week until Philadelphia heads home for the final homestand of the season and battle two top teams in baseball, Milwaukee and Tampa Bay.

If the Phillies take two out of three, the lead is now down to two games, and they have major momentum for the rest of their final road trip where they face two bottom feeders in the division, the Washington Nationals and New York Mets.

The implication of either side winning is humongous, and could very well determine who will come into October as the National League East division champions.

Get These Bumps Out Of Here

The major frustration that the Phillies dealt with over the homestand was massive inconsistencies. Every aspect of the team was up and down; whether the rotation, lineup, or bullpen, they just could not perform consistently.

The examples are endless with this past homestand: the bullpen collapse in the Sunday afternoon 5-4 loss to Atlanta, entering the eighth leading 4-1, four runs allowed in the last two innings, which took away a major momentum shift. The offense put up 11 runs Wednesday night against Houston and then only scored one the next day in the rubber match. Jesus Luzardo and Zack Wheeler had amazing outings, but Andrew Painter and Cristopher Sanchez struggled big time.

Luckily, the Phillies are facing a Braves team that is also cold at the moment and have a chance to get rid of the inconsistent play. It’s not impossible; the Phillies had good games throughout the homestand, and throughout August they played consistently and quickly bounced back when there were bumps in the road.

Bouncing back from this current set of bumps is a major key in performing well come October. Teams are bound to hit snags, but it is the best teams that get out of those snags the quickest that perform the best.

Starters Must Recoup And Recover

A major factor in the issues in the Astros series was the struggles of the starting pitching. It began with a very bad start by Andrew Painter, one where he allowed five runs, a career-high 10 hits, and two moonshot long balls. It was not good no matter how you slice it.

However, Painter cannot let that bad start get to his head. Painter just had the start before he went seven shutout innings against the Arizona Diamondbacks; he was spectacular. Most of his starts since returning from his minor league stint have been very successful. One bad start should not cause anxiety or fear to creep up.

Now, of course, he needs to fix the issues he dealt with that start. He had very poor command; he was not pounding the zone, and when the ball was in the zone, it was not a quality strike, which led to hard hits and runs.

Painter gets the game three nod during this series, and no doubt it will be an important one at that. His start against Atlanta this Sunday is going to be as close to a postseason start as Painter can get right now. It will be a very important and very valuable litmus test for the young righty.
