Eagles Select CB Quinyon Mitchell in First Round
SB Nation
With the 22nd pick of the 2024 NFL draft, the Philadelphia Eagles have selected Quinyon Mitchell, a cornerback from Toledo.
Mitchell, who was rated by most as the best cornerback in this year’s draft, fell to the Eagles at pick 22, and they are able to fill a massive need with this pick.
For those of us in Philadelphia who have not watched a lot of Toledo football Quinyon Mitchell is a special athlete at the corner position. In the combine, Mitchell ran a 4.33 in the 40. At 6 feet tall and 196 pounds he has good size, and with his combination of size and speed, he can cover just about any receiver in the league. In 2023 Mitchell had 437 coverage snaps with 0 touchdowns allowed with a passer rating of 51.1. Mitchell also was great at breaking up passes at Toledo recording 46 in his career which was a school record.
There is no doubt that the numbers jump off the screen for Mitchell, but there is one major concern, and that is that he played at Toledo. Yes, many many many players have come from small schools and become great NFL players, but many have not. At Toledo, Mitchell was not going up against the top receivers week after week like a guy who played in the SEC. He dominated in the MAC, and we will have to hope that he is ready to take on the great receivers in the NFL.
Overall I like the pick for the Eagles. To be able to sit at pick 22 and draft the consensus top cornerback in the draft was a dream scenario. I think that Mitchell’s size and speed will translate to the NFL, and we have seen guys like Sauce Gardner come from a smaller school and dominate in the NFL. I would also like to see Mitchell start from day one. With Darius Slay and James Bradberry as the current starting corners, I would like to see the Eagles move on from Bradberry and give Mitchell the starting job opposite Slay. After next season Slay will likely be gone, and Mitchell needs to have a year under his belt playing against NFL competition before taking over the number one corner spot. I would be pretty disappointed if he is not a starting corner when the Eagles kick off week 1 in Brazil.
Ultimately I am nervous that he hasn’t played a lot of great competition, but I can not blame the Eagles for taking a shot on his upside. With the pick of the litter at the cornerback position available for the Eagles, they better have got the right one.
