The Philadelphia Eagles made a splash on day two of the 2024 NFL Draft, trading up ten spots in the second round to select coveted cornerback Cooper DeJean from Iowa. In a move that signals a clear commitment to fortifying their secondary, the Eagles surrendered their original second-round picks (50th and 53rd overall) to secure DeJean at 40th.

This aggressive maneuver comes after the Eagles addressed the cornerback position in the first round with Toledo’s Quinyon Mitchell at 22nd overall. The decision to invest significant draft capital in the secondary reflects a long-term vision for the Eagles’ defensive backfield.

DeJean, a polished collegiate player known for his press-man coverage skills, is expected to contribute immediately. His arrival gives Defensive Coordinator Vic Fangio a formidable young duo alongside Mitchell. With Darius Slay entering his twilight years, DeJean and Mitchell have the potential to lock down opposing receivers for years to come.

The Eagles’ secondary has been a source of weakness in recent seasons. Slay, while a veteran presence, has shown signs of decline. Injuries and inconsistent play have plagued the rest of the cornerback group. By injecting young talent with upside, the Eagles are hoping to solidify a unit that has been a defensive Achilles’ heel.

While trading away draft picks carries inherent risk, the Eagles clearly believe DeJean has the talent to be a foundational piece. Pairing him with Mitchell creates a young, athletic cornerback tandem with the potential to excel in Fangio’s aggressive defensive scheme. The success of this gamble will hinge on DeJean’s development, but the Eagles have undeniably taken a significant step towards fortifying their secondary for the foreseeable future.
