After struggling through a 3-game losing streak, peaking with a 13-2 loss in the first game of the series Monday night against the Washington Nationals, the Phillies bounced back with a much-needed 3-2 victory.
This game was exciting and important for this Phillies team. The offense has been struggling to produce since Opening Day, and outside of Cristopher Sanchez‘s performance, so has the starting pitching. However, that changed tonight, with beautiful 80-degree weather and a packed house, the Phillies’ offense produced enough runs to get the job done, and the debut of the Phillies’ top pitching prospect, Andrew Painter, made everyone starstruck.
Kyle Schwarber got the scoring started with a long solo homer into right field in the 3rd inning off Nationals pitcher Zack Littell, a needed run since the Phillies’ offense had been failing to produce early in games since Opening Day. Adolis Garcia added to the scoring with his first home run as a Phillie, a solo blast in the 4th, also off Littell and into right field. Finally, Bryce Harper drove in a run while the bases were loaded with a grounder to Nationals first baseman Luis Garcia Jr. that he misplayed and caused all runners to be safe, scoring Justin Crawford.

That was all the runs the Phillies needed tonight as Painter and the bullpen took care of business. Painter went into the 6th inning not allowing a run, gave up a 1-out single to CJ Abrams, got taken out for Tanner Banks, and due to an unfortunate turn of events caused in the next at-bat by a Garcia throw to third that ricocheted off of CJ Abrams into the stands, causing him to score. Banks would surrender a run in the 7th, but get through it, keeping the Philies in front 3-2, and then Brad Keller and Jhoan Duran closed out the 8th and 9th innings to give the Phillies the victory.
The Artist has arrived
In a debut 3 years in the making, Painter took full advantage. He struck out the very first batter he saw on a beautiful curve, below the box, that got Nationals outfielder James Wood chasing en route to a 1-2-3 inning for Painters’ first Major League inning.
He didn’t stop there. Painter continued to use all his pitches effectively, consistently throwing a four-seam that averaged in the 96-97 MPH range, topping out at 99, with stellar off-speed and breaking pitches. Painter, using all his pitches superbly, struck out 8 Nationals hitters in 5 innings, tied for 2nd in franchise history for strikeouts in a debut performance. His night ended with a box score of 5.1 innings pitched, 4 hits allowed, 1 run allowed, 1 walk surrendered, and 8 strikeouts on 84 pitches and 57 strikes. He left with a roaring standing ovation from the Citizens Bank Park crowd and the relief of finally making his major league debut, and the excitement of what will come next for the artist.

Offensive Baby Steps
The offense has been a key issue for the team since Opening Day. The home runs had left after last Thursday, the Phillies couldn’t hit with Runners-in-scoring-position to save their life, and the top 3 hitters in the lineup weren’t producing.
While all concerns are still there and valid, tonight we saw a little progress. The home runs came back with Schwarber and Garcia each hitting solo shots. Hitting with men on still wasn’t great, but the Phils did get a run from it in the 5th on the Harper grounder, which ended being the winning run.
Finally, the top 3 did produce tonight. Each hitter got on base at least once, their at-bats looked a little more competitive, and most importantly, they contributed to the Phillies winning, and that’s what’s most important.
Rubber Match
The Phillies and Nationals go for the rubber match on Wednesday, April 1st, at 1:05 PM. Cristopher Sanchez (1-0, 0.00 ERA) will get his 2nd start of the year against Cade Cavalli (0-0, 4.91 ERA).
