Eagles Rule Out Edge Rusher Jonathan Greenard For Week 1

Philadelphia will be without their big offseason acquisition for their season opener Sunday afternoon.
The Eagles have announced that edge rusher Jonathan Greenard will miss the team’s Week 1 matchup against the Washington Commanders because of the pec injury he’s dealt with all summer.
Greenard was acquired back in late 2026 during the NFL Draft from the Minnesota Vikings for two third-round picks (one in that year’s draft and the other in 2027). The veteran edge rusher was looking for a pay raise with the Vikings after spending the first two years of his four-year, $76 million contract in Minneapolis.
Minnesota disagreed with wanting to extend Greenard and made him available in trade talks, eventually trading him to Philadelphia. Upon landing with the Eagles, Greenard signed a new four-year, $100 million deal with $50 million guaranteed, placing him in the top 10 of the highest-paid edge rushers in the NFL.
Back in Late July, Greenard suffered what the team described as a pec strain while lifting weights, causing him to be placed on the physically unable to perform list and sidelining him for all of training camp.
Greenard eventually returned to practice earlier this week and spoke to the media about whether or not he’d be able to suit up for Week 1’s season opener. While he gave positive answers, the end-all question seemed to be that the team feels he needs more ramp-up and practice time before he’s ready to suit up for game action.
Following the Commanders game in Week 1, the Eagles travel to Nashville for a matchup against the Tennessee Titans, one of the worst teams in the NFL last season, and then to Chicago for a Monday night matchup against the Bears in Week 3.
While you don’t want to take any team lightly, the Eagles could keep Greenard out until Week 3, giving him extra time to continue rehab, and have him healthy for the tough stretch the Eagles start from that game on.
