With the new year underway, the Philadelphia Flyers certainly had no hesitation with pushing for an extension with offseason acquisition Christian Dvorak, who could have signed as early as January 1. With reports of the extension being in the works prior to the new year, it only took until January 5 for the contract to go through, as the Flyers’ new center is here to stay for a half-decade.
Dvorak and the Flyers agree on five years with an average annual value of $5.15 million. Though this is not the extension anyone would have guessed to have been pushed for, there are a lot of benefits that come with the move
Dvorak, who had spent the last four seasons with the Montreal Canadiens, has made a great impression on the Flyers after signing a one-year deal this offseason with rather low expectations. In a full 82-games last year, Dvorak had only 12 goals and 21 assists. On top of that, he had a season +/- of -5 on a Canadiens team that made the playoffs with 91 points. Though these are not awful statistics, many fans and reporters questioned the one-year deal with an AAV of $5.40 million for a center coming off a 33-point season.

All of the controversy aside, Dvorak has gone above expectations halfway through the 2025-26 NHL season, with 25 points in 39 games played, and a +/- of +8, 13 more than last year’s. Nine goals and 16 assists halfway look to have potential to keep up his great play, as his new teammates and linemates have brought him up to third on the Flyers in points, tied with Owen Tippett and behind Travis Konecny at 36 points and Trevor Zegras at 39 points. The three names with him on that list have seen many shifts with Dvorak, showing the chemistry he has built with his new guys.
With the great season that Dvorak is having, there are a lot of questions regarding the move by Daniel Briere and his staff. The first concern regards his age. Dvorak, at age 29, turns 30on February 2, meaning that once he gets to age 31, 32, and all the way up to about 35, he may not be producing at the rate he is right now, even if he sees his linemates stay with him. The extension also includes a no-trade clause for the first two years, a limited no-trade clause in years 3 and 4, and no trade protection in year 5. Even though securing Dvorak for some time was a move on the list, 5 years is possibly too much, but Briere certainly knows something the Flyers’ fans don’t.

The other big question regards another offseason acquisition in Zegras, whom the Flyers received from the Anaheim Ducks for Ryan Phoeling and a couple of draft picks. Zegras, who finally got his change of scenery, has raked in his time with the Flyers, leading the team in goals with 15 and assists with 24. With Trevor being a restricted free agent at the end of this season, many fans wanted Zegras’ extension to be the number one priority, even over pushing for the playoffs. With that being said, Dvorak’s contract extension coming may raise a few eyebrows, as fans would want the younger Zegras to be the priority.
With that, there are positives, such as the fact that since Zegras and Dvorak have worked so well together this season, the Dvorak extension may play a factor in that Zegras would love to stay with his new friend. This signing absolutely does not affect the mutual choice to bring in Zegras for a long-term extension, unless it affects the choice in a positive way.
Overall, Dvorak is here to stay, meaning that general quality and leadership will be palpable for the next five years.
