After a very successful road trip in Florida and in the tri-state area, the Flyers headed home to their home crowd behind them, with their newly found success. This game not only meant a lot for the team’s success, but also for the team’s blood, as they welcomed in their cold-blooded rivals in the Pittsburgh Penguins, in another Metropolitan Division showdown for the Flyers.

This game, however, did not go the Flyers’ way, as they hardly found any success on offense and failed to execute on defense.

The 5-1 loss for the Flyers was a result of many factors that caused both sides of the ice, including the goaltending, to fall short of their recent surge. Whether it was a historic Flyer killer coming into town or returning home after a long road trip, the Flyers, if they want to find a rhythm down the road, must not let any factors get in the way of their success, especially against a rival like the Penguins.

Crosby Tortures Philadelphia, Once Again

One of the biggest pains in all of Philadelphia sports throughout the history of the city has been Penguins’ star and captain Sidney Crosby. Entering tonight, Crosby, against the Flyers, had played 91 games and had tallied 135 points (57 goals, 78 assists). Tonight was an exact microcosm of that, as Crosby found the back of the net twice tonight, once on the power play.

After a penalty for the Penguins had ended, the rush started, and though Vladar was able to make the first save, the rebound off his pads went to guess who? Crosby, who wasted no time burying the first goal of the night. With Crosby nearing 100 games against the Flyers, some might expect them to have a plan to guard the man, but a player as skilled as Crosby cannot be contained, and hasn’t been for the last 20+ years.

His second goal of the night came on a Penguins power play, where he, once again, wasted no time tallying his second of the game just 18 seconds into the power play. No matter how hard the Flyers seem to try, they simply do not have a solution for Sid the Kid, even after two decades.

Penalty Kill Blinks Three Times in Loss

Crosby’s goal on the penalty would not be the end of the Pens’ power play, as they would strike twice more throughout the game. With Crosby’s goal giving the Penguins the lead, another penalty from the Flyers would give them another opportunity to expand to a two-goal lead, which is exactly what Bryan Rust and the Penguins did. Another opportunity was taken after the Flyers had continued to take frustrating penalties.

The Penguins would start the third period off with another power play goal, now scoring three power play goals out of the four opportunities they were given. The Flyers’ penalty kill, which came into the game fourth in the league at 85.1%, had a kill percentage of 25% tonight, which hopefully was a fluke and will improve on Wednesday back at home.

Foerster Leaves with Scary Injury

With this game against the Penguins being bad enough, losing 5-1, the worst part of the game may be the fact that they lost one of their most key players, who might be out for a chunk of time.

Tyson Foerster, who scored his 10th goal of the season on the power play tonight, left the game just minutes later, as Foerster attempted a slap shot while the Flyers were still on the power play. Something must have felt off, but no one knows what truly happened to Foerster’s right arm, other than the fact that something is not right, as it did not look one bit good.

With his tenth goal, Foerster now becomes the Flyers’ leading goal scorer on the season. Foerster had always had a heavy shot on the ice, even at the point of the blue line. He had shown so much potential not only towards the end of last season but right now. The Flyers, if Foerster is out for an extended period of time, will be missing one of their core pieces to the team, as Foerster has looked the most developed he ever has.

Flyers Continue Six-Game Home Stand on Wednesday

After a loss like this, the Flyers need to move on without looking back hard at this game, even if they know they can learn from it. The Flyers take on the Buffalo Sabres, Wednesday night at 7:30 PM on TNT, where they look to get back on a new win streak after a rough game like tonight’s.
