Wild Card Implications: Phillies vs. Diamondbacks Series Preview, August 31-September 2

The Phillies head to Phoenix to close out the final West Coast trip of the season.
The Phillies are entering the finale series with good momentum. After a forgetful first two games against the Seattle Mariners to open the trip, the Phils took the Seattle finale 6-0, a very easy win. Afterwards, they swept out the Los Angeles Angels in several ways: good pitching performances and clutch offense. The four-game win streak the Phillies are currently enjoying has boosted their record in the month of August to 20-7, one of the best marks in the league.
The trip is going to be closed out against the Arizona Diamondbacks; this series is very important for the Phillies, not just for the Phillies, but for the National League playoff picture as well.
High Leverage Desert Battle
The momentum the Phillies have right now is going to be needed when taking on a potential playoff team in the Arizona Diamondbacks. The D-Backs currently hold the third Wild Card Spot in the National League, leading their division rivals, the San Diego Padres, by 0.5 game. Playing a style of baseball that can simply be put in the same style as the rest of the NL Wild Card picture: when they’re hot, a top-tier team in baseball; when cold, a bottom-tier team.
Unlike other teams in the Wild Card race like San Diego, Philly, and Chicago, the D-Backs did not make a large push to add at the trade deadline. The Phillies obviously added Luis Arraez, Chicago added arms like Kevin Gausman and Clay Holmes, and San Diego added two top starters in Casey Mize and Robbie Ray. Arizona? Traded with St. Louis for outfielder Lars Nootbaar.
That addition was also subtracted by the fact that star infielder Ketel Marte left the team, for reasons not entirely known. Now he is set to return this week, but the effect he will have on the field and in the locker room is certainly up in the air at the moment.
Now their lack of moves and locker drama does not mean take them lightly; Arizona is still the team holding the third Wild Card spot, and the last time Philly and Arizona battled was back in April at CBP, where Arizona took two of three.
However, the issues they have right now are weaknesses that the Phillies can take advantage of on top of the already strong momentum the Phightins have and could cause a major ripple in the third Wild Card spot scene.
Keep it Rolling
It has been made clear that the Phillies are entering this series with major momentum. However, they had some hiccups, starting issues in Seattle, some offensive bumps, and the bullpen looked shaky a couple times. While those issues did not end up costing the Phillies a whole lot, it’s important that they don’t let those ugly moments rear their head.
The luxury is that the Phils have a solid opportunity to keep rolling. Coming off a sweep, they have three starters who have had very solid outings in August toe the rubber this series. As well as an offense that has been the main reason the Phillies enter the series winners of four straight.
What has made the Phillies so successful during the month of August is that they have not let adversity sink them; they’ve kept strong consistency, and it’s paid off. Continuing to do that is going to be a major key in how much momentum, and where in the playoff picture, the Phillies end the season at.
Will Zeus Strike Again?
The Phillies pitching staff has looked very different this second half of the season compared to the first half. In the first half, it was the elite success of Cristopher Sanchez and a returning Zack Wheeler. Throughout the second half, the emergence of Andrew Painter and Aaron Nola has been reminiscent of the clock. Among that, though, has been just how dominant Jesus Luzardo has been since the All-Star Break.
Over Luzardo’s last 15 starts, he has pitched to a phenomenal 2.25 ERA. Not only is his ERA over his last 15 starts impressive, but it also undersells just how good he’s been. Since June 10, Luzardo has pitched to a 1.90 ERA with 123 strikeouts.
Luzardo had one of his best outings, though one that is becoming increasingly common, against Seattle on August 26. Throwing seven shutout innings, striking out nine Mariners en route to the Phillies’ first of what is now four straight victories during this road trip. That performance dropped Luzardo’s road ERA down to 1.79; he has simply turned up the volume and has been performing elite for the better part of two months.
Luzardo takes the bump in Game 2 against the D-Backs, looking to continue his dominance, and as we get closer to October, fight to show why he should get the ball in Game 1.
