Phillies proposing massive expansion to team store

Since 2023, the Phillies have had two major renovations to their fan experience at Citizens Bank Park.

In 2023, it was a massive, 77 percent increase to their PhanaVision in left field. In 2024, the out-of-town scoreboard in right field got overhauled and went digital.

Whether people like the changes or not (I am not a fan of either), the Phillies have proposed another expansion to a part of their fan experience.

The Phils are proposing a 7,014 sq. ft. expansion to their New Era team store, next to the third base gate.

Here are some renderings, via Ewing Cole and Pennoni:

“The Proposed Expansion will be constructed primarily within a portion of an existing landscaped area adjacent to the current Team Store and will also include the conversion of existing stadium gross floor area to retail use,” the proposal states. “Six (6) existing trees will be removed from the landscaped area and the remaining landscaped area will be infilled with low-lying plants and vegetation to allow for increased visibility of the Team Store from the public right of way.”

“The design of the Proposed Expansion is intended to match the existing Team Store façade, including a similar canopy design, façade glazing system, and pink masonry.”

The Phils keep making high-money revamps to things that are already fine. PhanaVision was perfect the way that it was. The out-of-town scoreboard was perfect. However, when money is involved, businesses will always shoot for the dollar, which is respectable.

Does it make me and other fans angry, especially those who do not like it when things change? Sure.

Should the money be spent on the players on the field and not on crazy-big screens to put more advertisements around the ballpark? Probably.

Does it matter? No.

This move is being made to have more merchandise in an already massive team store to make more what? Money!

The New Era team store is already pretty big. It has two floors and an overwhelming amount of overpriced merchandise. But it can get pretty tight in there. So, I am not upset about making it ginormous.

As I look more in-depth at all these renovations to “make the fan experience better,” they have all happened after the MLB announced that All-Star Week is coming to Philadelphia in 2026. The Phillies will have 50-100,000 people from around America come into their home for a week. To me, larger screens that show more stats and ads and a larger team store sound like things the MLB would request for money and fan experience purposes (but mostly money).

This is probably also step one in that massive, $2.5 billion project in the South Philadelphia Sports Complex that Comcast Spectacor is trying to do, which the Phillies are on board with.
