The Philadelphia Eagles gambled on the upside by selecting intriguing edge rusher Jalyx Hunt from Houston Christian University (HCU) with the 94th pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. Hunt, a player who rose through the ranks during the pre-draft process, injects raw athleticism into a defensive line looking for impactful pass rushers.
At 6’4″ and 252 pounds, Hunt boasts a long frame with impressive speed (4.64-second 40-yard dash). He showed flashes of dominance at HCU with his explosiveness off the snap and a repertoire of pass-rushing moves. However, his production was limited due to the competition level in the FCS.
While getting after the quarterback is his primary strength, Hunt isn’t a complete liability in run defense. He sets a decent edge and shows flashes of ability to contain outside runs. However, his overall development as a run defender will be crucial for him to see significant playing time.
“Jalyx is a project, but his upside is undeniable,” [Eagles defensive line coach Jeremiah Washburn said according to reports]*. His athleticism is rare, and his motor is impressive. We believe in his potential, and we’re excited to develop him into a contributor on our defensive front.”
The transition from college to the NFL will be a significant challenge for Hunt. He’ll need to add strength to compete against bigger offensive linemen, refine his technique, and gain experience against a higher level of competition. The Eagles coaching staff is confident in his work ethic and raw tools, but his development will take time.
Hunt adds depth to the Eagles’ edge rusher group. He’ll likely compete for snaps on special teams initially while learning from veterans on the roster. His athleticism and potential as a pass rusher offer a glimmer of hope for a unit that needs improvement in generating pressure.
There will undoubtedly be bumps in the road for Jalyx Hunt as he adjusts to the NFL. However, his intriguing skillset and dedication offer a glimpse of a potential future contributor. With his raw athleticism and development under the Eagles’ coaching staff, Jalyx Hunt could become a significant piece of the Eagles’ pass-rushing puzzle down the line.
