The Philadelphia Flyers (36-30-11) traveled to Ohio tonight to take on the Columbus Blue Jackets (25-39-12).

The Flyers went into this game fading from their playoff berth opportunity as they continued to struggle in their late-season flight to the playoffs. They had lost six straight games playing some very sloppy hockey all around and headed into this game desperately needing a win.

The Flyers lost tonight 6-2 and we’re gonna go over how that happened.

The first period went down in recent Flyers fashion as they weren’t able to get ahead of the Blue Jackets. Nick Blankenburg of the Blue Jackets was sent to the box via a high sticking call that gave the Flyers 4 minutes to secure a powerplay goal. The Flyers even with the added man advantage were unable to get a mark in the score column. The Blue Jackets on the other were able to score their first goal of the night courtesy of a snapshot by Erik Gudbranson 12 minutes and 8 seconds into the first. Damon Severson then closed out the 1st period with a snap-shot goal that extended the lead of the Blue Jackets to 2-0.

8 minutes and 23 seconds into the 2nd period Damon Severson found his second goal of the night off of another snap shot goal that put the Blue Jackets even farther ahead at 3-0. The Flyers in the later half of the period found their first goal of the night as Olle Lycksell scored his first goal of the season to stop the bleeding and put the score at 3-1

Coming to the surprise of almost nobody at this point the Flyers once again let up another goal to the blue jackets falling behind once again. Nick Blankenburg was able to extend the lead of the Blue Jackets to 3 as the score was put up to 4-1.

The 3rd period kicked off and the Flyers seemed quick to get the score back to even as they were finally putting pressure onto the Blue Jackets defense. Eventually, the Flyers fell behind in momentum as they let up a few penalties allowing the Blue Jackets to get a powerplay goal off of the shot from Zach Werenski. Zach Werenski was not done with that goal as just a few minutes later he was able to put away his ninth goal of the season and extend their lead to 6-1. In an attempt to chip away at the Blue Jackets lead, Adam Ginning was able to score his first goal of his NHL career.

The Flyers were silenced after this goal as the clock began to run out for this collapsing team. The matchup ended at 6-2 and the Flyers once again took home another loss and continue to fade farther from a playoff berth. The Flyer’s next few games are truly going to be of utmost importance as there is no room for error in these final moments of the season.
