The Eagles made some big splashes in the 2024 free agency pool, but did Howie Roseman make the right waves?

Let’s dive into their acquisitions and hand out some grades.

Big-Ticket Back: Saquon Barkley (A-)

The Move: The Eagles signed the former Offensive Rookie of the Year to a 3-year deal.

Analysis: This is a bold move. Barkley’s talent is undeniable, his receiving ability adds a new dimension to the Eagles’ offense, and he takes the pressure off Jalen Hurts.  However, injury history is a concern.  If healthy, this is an A+ move.  The slight downgrade reflects the risk.

Pass Rush Powerhouse: Bryce Huff (B+)

The Move: The Eagles inked the rising edge rusher to a lucrative 3-year deal.

Analysis: Huff’s pressure rate was elite last season, filling a gaping hole on the Eagles’ defensive line. The price tag is high, but edge rushers are a premium. The success hinges on Huff translating his production to a bigger role.

Adding Swagger to the D: C.J. Gardner-Johnson (CJGJ) (B+)

The Move: Poised to be a significant factor for the Eagles’ defense in 2024, assuming he stays healthy.

Analysis: Proven playmaker: In 2022 with the Eagles, he tied for the league lead with interceptions before a kidney injury. Even in 2023 with a torn pectoral muscle, he snagged an interception. He brings a ball-hawking mentality the defense desperately needs.  CJGJ can play both safety and slot cornerback, giving defensive coordinator Vic Fangio flexibility in scheme design and matchups.  Described as having swagger and confidence, CJGJ’s return could energize a defense that lacked that spark in 2023.  Overall, CJGJ’s return is a positive sign for the Eagles defense. His talent, versatility, and leadership potential make him a key piece for their success in 2024.

Depth Addition: Zack Baun (C+)

The Move: The Eagles brought in the versatile linebacker on a one-year prove-it deal.

Analysis:  Solid depth signing. Baun brings experience and competition to the linebacker group.  This is a low-risk move with potential upside, but it won’t drastically change the Eagles’ defense.

Line Depth: Matt Hennessy (B)

The Move: a shrewd move by Howie Roseman that addresses a need while also adding depth and versatility to the roster. Hennessy’s athleticism, intelligence, and technical proficiency make him an exciting addition to the team, and his presence will undoubtedly bolster the Eagles’ offensive line heading into the upcoming season.

Analysis:  While Hennessy brings a valuable skill set to the Eagles’ roster, there are still questions surrounding his ability to seamlessly transition to a new team and system. With time and experience, however, Hennessy has the potential to develop into a key contributor for the Eagles, making this signing a solid investment in the team’s future success.

Overall Grade: B+

The Eagles addressed key needs with these acquisitions. Barkley provides a dynamic offensive weapon, and Huff should be a force on the pass rush. The grades reflect the calculated risks involved, particularly with Barkley’s health.  However, this offseason has undeniably improved the Eagles’ roster.

Burning Question

Can the offensive line hold up with a more involved Barkley?

Final Thoughts

The Eagles haven’t finished building their team, but these free-agency moves give them a strong foundation.  How they answer the remaining questions will determine if they truly soar or just take flight in 2024.
