Less than a week after the Anaheim Ducks decided to match the offer sheet for Leo Carlsson, the Flyers made a move on one of their important RFAs today, avoiding a potentially costly salary arbitration hearing.

With five days to go, the Flyers signed Trevor Zegras to a four-year deal with an AAV of $9.125 million, becoming the Flyers’ highest-paid player on their roster. The deal has a limited no-trade clause in Years 3 and 4 of the deal.

Zegras, 25, was generally seen as the best player on the ice for the Flyers on many nights last season, and when it came to shootouts, he was one of the best in the NHL. His stats made an uptick this season with him playing in 81 games, with a team-leading 26 goals and 41 assists.

His 67 points were second on the team to Travis Konecny, as was his 18:43 time on ice. The one stat that tells the story was his shooting percentage, which was at 15.6%, which shows how unselfish he was on the ice last season.

One of the best compliments that came from several younger Flyers players last season was that Zegras plays the game like another coach on the ice, something that Zegras took much pride in. This level of play from your front-line center is what’s needed with a young team looking to turn the corner.

In light of the Carlsson decision, the irony of two former Ducks top prospects isn’t missed with Zegras and fellow Flyers RFA Jamie Drysdale both being players that weren’t allowed to grow in Anaheim as they were with the Flyers, and will likely both be critical parts of this Flyers team for the foreseeable future.
