Brian Johnson won’t return to Eagles, coaching staff members reportedly upset

Eagles offensive coordinator Brian Johnson will not be returning for the 2024 season, JAKIB Sports’ Derrick Gunn and the Philadelphia Inquirer‘s Jeff McLane reported.

The Eagles are also moving on from defensive coaches Sean Desai and Matt Patricia. Johnson is now the next Eagles coach to go in Nick Sirianni’s rehaul, who will now have to replace both of the top coordinators for the 2024 season.

Johnson, 36, spent just one season as the Eagles’ offensive coordinator. He had previously been the Eagles’ quarterbacks coach for two seasons.

The Eagles’ offense took a rather large step backward this season with Johnson in control. There was a clear disconnect between Sirianni, Johnson, and Jalen Hurts. The Eagles may have finished with a top-10 offense but it was nowhere near elite. And after returning all but two starters on offense from a Super Bowl team, there were high expectations and the Eagles absolutely did not live up to them, and the playcalling by Johnson was a major reason. They were not all on him, but he did receive a bulk of criticism from the fanbase.

Johnson has surprisingly been a head coaching candidate this cycle. He interviewed for the Tennesee Titans and Atlanta Falcons jobs. While the Titans’ have made a hire, the Falcons’ job is still available.

After the announcement came out of the firing, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN was on 97.5 The Fanatic and said that Eagles staff members were upset about Johnson being let go.

“There’s some weird vibes out of there,” Fowler said Tuesday. “I just don’t know that everybody on the staff is happy about everything that’s gone down – especially with Brian Johnson who was sort of caught in the middle…

“We’ll see what other staff changes are made. I think there are people on the staff that may not want to be there because of some of the dysfunction that went on the last few months. It could go beyond a couple coordinators.”
