The Philadelphia Flyers, who are now a point behind the second-place Carolina Hurricanes, have now won three straight games and five of their last six. While a lot of factors have played into their now 14-7-3 record, the biggest increase for Philadelphia is their offense, which has now caught fire as we enter the month of December.

Earlier this season, the Flyers had a number of issues on the offensive side, even though they were finding ways to win games with their defense. While playing well, there was not a lot of hope that this would continue, as they were struggling to score three goals in a game. That trend would enter into November as well, as they scored two goals against the Toronto Maple Leafs, one goal against the Calgary Flames, and one goal against the Edmonton Oilers, all three of whom have had their fair share of goaltending issues. Until recently, the Flyers haven’t seemed to take advantage of bad goaltending.

It wasn’t until November 14th against the St. Louis Blues that the offense would start to show fight, and the Flyers would begin to get goals when they needed them most. They scored five regulation goals to expand the game and ultimately take the game in a shootout. That would be the game where we would start to see Owen Tippett and Christian Dvorak get comfortable, as they each had a pair of tallies.

Though the offense looked like it had found an identity, there was still much more to come, as the Flyers’ offense would achieve an incredible feat on November 22nd, against the New Jersey Devils at home. Matvei Michkov, who had struggled offensively at the start of the season, and Tyson Foerster, whom Flyers fans had big expectations for at the start of the season, combined for three goals in 26 seconds, a franchise record.

This occurrence was not a one-time thing, as they would find themselves in a similar situation, two games later, towards the end of the game in Florida. With a two-goal tie, Foerster’s eighth of the year gave the Flyers the lead in a huge way. Though that is nice on its own, it was nicer only 21 seconds later, when Sean Couturier would end a 17-game goalless drought, huge for the Captain of this hockey club if he wants to spark himself once again. The Flyers won the game 4-2 against the two-time defending cup champs in the Florida Panthers.

If that wasn’t enough, the Flyers, in the next game, would use their Black Friday deals on two more goals in a short span, this time in 22 seconds. Those two goals, however, were a mirror image of Florida’s goal surge, as Foerster and Couturier got onto goal streaks for the Flyers.

With the Flyers going nine straight games without scoring the first goal, the Flyers have scored first in back-to-back games, during a scheduled back-to-back, another improvement for the offense. During the Flyers’ four-game road trip, they took three against four exemplary opponents, not only with the power of their new goaltending skills, but with their developed offense that has shown its potential up to this point.

The Flyers, though they don’t have that star sniper with 16 goals, have eight players with five or more goals on the year, and five players with 10 or more assists on the year, which ranks towards the top in the NHL. The offense they have improved is a group effort, and everyone is starting to get involved. With young talent like Trevor Zegras, who has nine goals, and sneaky signings like Dvorak, who has six goals on the year.

The Flyers start the month of December with a division game against the Pittsburgh Penguins, whom they had beaten in a shootout earlier this season. With the Flyers on the rise and the Penguins starting to cool down, the Flyers hope to show their in-state friends their newly developed offense.
