MLS to Shift to Europe-Style Calendar in 2027, Bringing Warmer Playoffs and Smarter Roster Building

So it’s official: Major League Soccer is about to look a lot more like Europe.
Starting in 2027, the league will switch from its current February-to-December setup to a summer-to-spring calendar that kicks off in late July and wraps up in May, complete with a real winter break. The goal is to finally get in sync with the global soccer world.
It’s the kind of move that’s been teased for years, but now MLS has finally pulled the trigger. Commissioner Don Garber called it one of the biggest changes in MLS history, and he’s not wrong. For years, MLS teams have been juggling awkward transfer windows and losing players to international duty in midseason. MLS clubs are struggling to get global signings settled in the middle of a campaign, and this shift cleans that up. Clubs will now open preseason camps in June, start their seasons in the heart of summer, pause from mid-December to early February, and finish the playoffs under warm spring skies instead of the cold fall rain.

For Philadelphia, it’s a big deal. The Union are one of those teams that always seem to get stuck playing key games in freezing conditions. Anyone who’s ever sat at Subaru Park in November knows the feeling of trying to clap through gloves. Under the new format, MLS says it will schedule around harsh-weather cities as much as possible. You might still get the occasional frigid night, but those late-season home games will mostly land in May instead of December, which means better crowds, better field conditions, and probably a better product.
The front office will like this too. Ernst Tanner and his scouting network will finally be operating on the same rhythm as most of the soccer world. That means new signings can arrive in July, get a full preseason, and actually start the season on time instead of showing up halfway through and needing weeks to adjust. For a club that prides itself on smart recruiting and player development, that’s a major advantage. It also makes it easier to sell players abroad at the right moments, with Europe’s January window aligning perfectly with midseason in MLS.
There’s also a transition season coming in 2027, a short sprint from February to May that’ll run only 14 games and determine qualification for tournaments like the U.S. Open Cup, Leagues Cup, and Concacaf Champions Cup. It’ll be quick, intense, and a little weird, but it sets up the reset for the first full July-to-May cycle.

Of course, there are still some things to figure out. The league hasn’t detailed exactly how it’ll handle playoff formats, or how many cold-weather games teams like the Union might get in February. There’s also the question of what clubs will do during that new winter break, maybe training camps abroad or preseason tournaments to stay sharp.
But when you take a step back, this change finally puts MLS where it’s always wanted to be, part of the global soccer schedule instead of an outlier. For the Union, it means more control over roster building, better conditions for the fans, and a spring playoff run that feels like a celebration rather than survival. The league will look different, the timing will change, but for the Union, this might be the kind of change that plays right into their hands. Given their recent social media posts about practicing in the cold, this will be a welcome change for the Union players
Another MLS note: Apple TV will be suspending its MLS Season Pass next season and making all MLS matches free to all Apple TV subscribers, making watching MLS action easier next season.
