Make Or Break Weeks For Kevin Patullo If Eagles Offensive Struggles Continue

These next two weeks may be the biggest of the season for the Philadelphia Eagles, and more importantly, for Eagles offensive coordinator and playcaller Kevin Patullo.
Coming off a dominant Super Bowl LIX win over the Kansas City Chiefs, the Eagles were set to continue their run at being a potential dynasty following the win. In 2025, the majority of the starters from the team’s previous season were returning, and it looked like the Eagles were well in line to go back-to-back and lift a Lombardi Trophy for the second year in a row. While the season is still very young, the odds of that happening have significantly decreased compared to the start of the year.
It’s no secret that the Eagles have been a confusing and frustrating team overall throughout the first six weeks of the 2025 NFL season. While the defense has struggled, injuries and a shuffle of new faces and starters could be the cause of the lack of dominant play from the previous season.
However, for the offensive side of the ball, there’s almost no excuse for the performances that they’ve put on over the last month and a half.
The Eagles returned 10 of the 11 starters on offense from last year, the sole non-returnee being guard Mekhi Becton, who was replaced by Tyler Steen. Essentially, the same Eagles offense was rolled out for 2025, except for one small change that seems to be turning into a major change.
Former Eagles offensive coordinator and playcaller Kellen Moore left the Eagles after last season to become the next head coach of the New Orleans Saints. It’s the second time in Nick Sirianni’s tenure as head coach that he has lost an offensive coordinator to a head coaching job, the previous being when Shane Steichen left after Super Bowl LVII for the Indianapolis Colts.
Last time Sirianni stayed in-house to name a new OC, promoting quarterbacks coach Brian Johnson for the 2023 season. If you’re not familiar with that season, that was the one where the Eagles, coming off a Super Bowl loss, started the season 10-1, before losing five of their final six games, making the playoffs as a five seed and getting blown out in the first round by Tampa Bay.
The Eagles fired Johnson after one season. So heading into a very similar scenario in 2025, what did the Eagles decide to do? They decided to hire in-house and promote pass game coordinator and associate head coach Kevin Patullo to offensive coordinator. Unfortunately for them, it’s looking like the Eagles may have another 2023 season on their hands.
This season, the Eagles rank 30th in the league in total 274.5 offensive yards per game. Only the Bengals and the Titans rank below the Eagles, and the Bengals have been without Joe Burrow for nearly the entire year, and the Titans are starting rookie quarterback Cam Ward and just fired their head coach.
It’s not even one part of the offense that has been bad; it’s everything. They rank 29th in passing offense, 25th in rushing offense, and 27th in third-down offense. The only thing they’ve been good at is red zone offense, as they rank first in the league in it, scoring in the red zone 87.5% of the time. However, that’s in large part due to them not being in the red zone as much as other teams.
Whose to blame for these struggles? Jalen Hurts, A.J. Brown, Saquon Barkley, the offensive line? In large part as a whole, it feels that this blame falls fully on Patullo. While players haven’t outwardly said that it’s all on him, the longest tenured Eagle and team captain, Lane Johnson, spoke out after last Thursday’s loss to the New York Giants. Johnson said that moving the ball on offense “seems a lot harder than what it needs to be.”
The offense seems too predictable, and opposing teams are picking them apart because of it. This has caused games where little offense can be achieved, and because of that, star playmakers like Brown, Barkley, and DeVonta Smith are not getting their touches.
The offensive struggles didn’t seem like a problem when the team was winning, as they were doing what they needed to do to win games. However, back-to-back ugly losses, one being a home loss to the Broncos and a beatdown at the hands of the rival New York Giants, are causing many to question if Patullo can be the guy to help the Eagles get back to the Super Bowl.
Coming off 10 days of rest, the Eagles have just two games to go until their official bye week. If changes are not made soon, as in this weekend against the Vikings or the following weekend against the Giants, the Eagles may be in line to find a new offensive coordinator.
