Add an All-Star Game MVP to the Schwarbarian’s trophy case.
Philadelphia Phillies designated hitter/outfielder Kyle Schwarber has been named the 2025 All-Star Game MVP. Schwarber is the second Phillie ever and first to win MVP since Johnny Callison won the award in 1964, when he hit a walk-off home run to win 7-4.
It’s a strange win on paper for Schwarber as he went 0-2 with a walk, but ended up walking away with the Ted Williams MVP. Schwarber becomes the first non-pitcher in MLB history to win the All-Star Game MVP without getting a hit in the game.
The National League went up big in the game, leading 6-0 at one point, but the American League fought back with Cleveland Guardians’ outfielder Steven Kwan smacking a game-tying infield single in the ninth to tie things up at six.
The National League failed to walk it off in the ninth, so for the first time, the game was to be decided with a home run derby-style swing-off. Three batters from each team were selected to take three swings, and the team that finished with more home runs would win.
Brent Rooker kicked things off for the American League, hitting two bombs, and Kyle Stowers hit one for the National League. Randy Arozarena was up next and hit just one bomb to lead 3-1, but next up was Schwarber.
Schwarber then smacked not one, not two, but three Schwarbombs into the night to give the National League a 4-3 lead. Jonathan Arnada was the final man for the American League, and he failed to hit any homers, crowning the National League the winners of the Midsummer Classic.
This was the third All-Star game for Schwarber, and he was the sole representative for the Phillies. Zack Wheeler opted not to pitch in the game, and fellow teammates Trea Turner, Cristopher Sanchez, and Ranger Suarez were all snubbed from the team. Schwarber currently leads the Phillies in home runs this season with 30 and will be a free agent this summer.
