The month of June has come to an end, and so has a phenomenal month from the Phillies’ ace, Zack Wheeler.
Though he has been one of the more dominant starters in all of baseball for the past five years, his five starts in the month of June this year are all to remember, as his eight shutout innings Monday night against the San Diego Padres caps off his pure domination as of late.
Wheeler put his six earned runs on May 29th against the Braves aside and into the past and showed why he belongs in his hometown, Atlanta, during this year’s Major League All-Star break.
Wheeler, who went into the month of June with a 2.96 ERA, lowered it all the way down to 2.27, thanks to a 0.58 ERA during this month. That’s two earned runs in 31 innings pitched, even, which is almost unheard of in the modern game of baseball, considering all of the talent around Major League Baseball.
Wheeler ended the month with a 10-strikeout performance against the Padres, adding to a total of 42 on the month. Wheeler, before Monday, had eight strikeouts against the Houston Astros and the New York Mets, nine against the Toronto Blue Jays, and seven against the Chicago Cubs during June. Though this is what Wheeler does best, as he ranks among the top of the league in strikeouts time after time, 42 Ks in his five starts is just another statistic to add to his incredible month he had.
Wheeler’s record during June was 2-1, though his one loss was with no earned runs in his start against the Astros, in which the offense failed to provide a single run. This was still a quality start for Wheeler, adding up to four on the month. In fact, Wheeler was one inning away from all quality starts in the month, as he went five innings against the Mets.
In total, Wheeler’s month of June ended with a 2-1 record and a 0.58 ERA, 42 strikeouts, three wins, seven walks, four quality starts, only one home run, and two earned runs allowed during 31 innings pitched, going down as one of the best months of his long, successful career. Though he has always fallen short of the Cy Young award, this historic month could start something huge for Wheeler.
All of the Phillies’ starting staff had a terrific month, but Wheeler’s June was a June no one will ever forget, as he continues to impact the Phillies in more and more ways.
