The bamboo plant is back in the Phillies’ clubhouse.

Six years ago, former Phillies’ infielder Brad Miller wanted to change the vibe in the clubhouse, as the team felt luck wasn’t going their way. So Miller took a trip to Chinatown and bought a lucky bamboo plant for the team. He intended for it to bring some good luck and to improve the Phillies’ vibe, as the team had lost 14 of 20 games in June that year.

His plan worked, to an extent. The Phillies began loosening up and picking up wins, and playing better baseball. While the end goal of the season, of making the playoffs and winning a World Series, wasn’t achieved, the Phillies felt like they were stepping in the right direction. Eventually, they achieved some of those goals, reaching the playoffs and even a World Series appearance.

Flash forward to the present day, and it seems that this current Phillies team is bringing the bamboo back. Phillies manager Rob Thomson has his own lucky bamboo plant in his office, and he spoke about how it not being in his office may have contributed to the team’s recent struggles.

The wife of Phillies pitching coach Kevin Long took care of the plant before the Phillies series against the Brewers and during their six-game road trip to Toronto and Pittsburgh. During those three series, the Phillies lost eight of the possible nine games.

Thomson jokingly said he had to get the plant back in his office, but since it’s returned, the team’s luck has flipped. They’ve won four of five over the Cubs and Blue Jays, and are going for a sweep over Toronto. Who knows how long the plant’s good luck will last for the Phillies, but for now, it seems as though the Phillies are once again using bamboo to help save their season.
