The Phillies’ offense dominated against the Blue Jays’ pitching as they completed the sweep at home. The sweep is a breath of fresh air as the team had just had its worst stretch of the season prior to the series.

Led by the rookie Otto Kemp, the Phillies totaled 18 and 9 of them against starter Jose Berrios.

Kemp stays hot

The rookie has looked incredible in these last 2 series for Rob Thomson and company. Today was Kemp’s best performance yet in MLB. He went 4 for 5, driving in 2 runs and stealing a base. With Bryce Harper on the IL, Kemp’s performance has helped revive the offense from its tough stretch not too long ago.

Kemp playing first base allows Alec Bohm to move back over to third base as well. Bohm himself has been nothing short of incredible for the past month and a half, and today was no different. Bohm went 2 for 3 and brought 3 runners home, including a monstrous home run in the 5th inning. He was patient at the plate as well, working 2 walks.

Bohm’s home run wasn’t the highlight of the day; however, that belongs to Nick Castellanos‘ grand slam in the 6th inning. The Phillies could barely miss the entire game.

Trea Turner also picked up 2 hits batting leadoff. He opened the game with a leadoff double, and a Kyle Schwarber single would score him just after. Schwarber himself also picked up 2 hits and drove in 2 runs. He’d also get 2 walks, one of them intentional and the other on 4 pitches.

Max Kepler and J.T. Realmuto would also get 2 hits each, with Kepler going 2 for 3 with a walk and J.T. going 2 for 4. The Phillies ended with an incredible 18 hits in one of the team’s most dominant performances this season.

6 solid innings from Wheeler

Zack Wheeler is a model of consistency for pitchers in MLB. This time around for Wheels, he continued to build his case for a Cy Young with 6.0 innings with just 1 earned run and 9 strikeouts. While he was charged with 2 runs, only 1 of them was earned due to a Kemp error.

Wheeler now sits with a 7-2 record on the year with a 2.76 ERA and a 4th-best 110 strikeouts.

After Wheeler, the former Blue Jay Jordan Romano pitched a scoreless 7th inning, and the team wouldn’t find trouble until Tanner Banks came on in the 8th. Banks struggled heavily, giving up 4 hits and 2 earned runs to add to what has been an up-and-down season. Max Lazar restored order to end the game and pitch a scoreless top of the ninth inning.

Who’s next?

The next 3 series are crucial to the Phillies’ long-term playoff hopes. The sweep helped right the ship, and they now sit at 42-29, 2.5 games back of the Mets in the NL East.

The Phillies take a trip to Miami to face the 28-41 Marlins from Monday to Thursday. Then, when they return, they get a chance at redemption. The Phils host the Mets in a crucial series to try and take over the NL East. Things don’t get easier with a trip to Houston to play the Astros right after that.
