Is Alec Bohm officially back?

Alec Bohm has been one of the more polarizing Phillies during his tenure. Flashes of brilliance followed by some of the most frustrating baseball you’ll ever see. One minute he “fu**ing hates this place,” and the next he’s making a sliding catch in foul territory to win it on the anniversary of his outburst.
After an incredible start to his 2024 season, which saw Bohm play the best baseball of his career and start at 3rd base in the All-Star Game, his play took a nosedive in the second half of the season. After August of the 2024 season, he hit just .238, and the Phillies’ offense would disappear in the NLDS. Bohm was disliked and doubted by the majority of the fan base for his play. He spent his offseason surrounded by trade rumors and questions regarding his future.
The start to this season was even worse for Alec. On May 2nd, the already loathed 3rd baseman sat with an abysmal .217 average. He wasn’t just not good anymore; he was a flat-out liability on the field.
Ever since May 2nd, however, something clicked for Bohm. He’s had a renaissance at the plate, a call back to his play in the first half of 2024. In just over a month, Bohm is hitting .336 with 5 home runs and 36 RBIs. He’s become the RBI machine the team needs him to be.
It’s not a coincidence that in that same time span, the Phillies have the second-best record in MLB at 20-9. Just last night, he had arguably his best game of the season, collecting 4 hits against the Blue Jays.
With this run of success for Alec, he’s most likely saved his job for the remainder of the season. His long-term future with the team is where things can become tricky.
The Phillies have 1 more year of arbitration for Bohm until he becomes an unrestricted free agent. With prospects like shortstop Aidan Miller and 3rd baseman Otto Kemp waiting in the minors, it creates a logjam to keep him here long term.
Spotrac has his market value set at $20.3 million a season, which would make him the 5th highest paid Phillie on the roster. With the Kyle Schwarber, Jesus Luzardo, Ranger Suarez, and J.T. Realmuto extensions possibly looming, it also becomes harder to see a world where Bohm gets a long-term deal in Philadelphia.
For now, we can just be happy for the great play Bohm has given the team for the past month. I think he’s been one of the more underappreciated Phillies during his 6 years here. While he can be extremely frustrating at times, you can’t deny the value he adds to the team when he’s at his best.
