Following the disappointing four-game losing streak, the Philadelphia Phillies found the motive and wasted no time tonight, as they tallied six runs in the top frame of the first inning in the series opener against the Toronto Blue Jays, coming away with an 8-3 win.

Not only did the power from this lineup of three home runs make a critical impact, but situational hitting and game awareness showed palpably tonight. RBIs with two outs and plate discipline were something that the Phillies struggled with this past series.

Hits With Runners in Scoring Position

Following back-to-back home runs from Trea Turner and Bryce Harper in the top of the first, the Phillies were looking to do even more damage with the opportunity to present themselves, as runners were on first and second. Max Kepler, who is looking to make a turnaround, found the gap up the middle to have Alec Bohm represent the fourth run scored in the top of the first.

The bats did not stop there, as with two outs and the bases loaded, Bryson Stott, with two strikes, singled to score two more, making it a six-run first inning.

The Phillies, over the past few seasons, have struggled with hits with runners in scoring position, especially with two outs and two strikes. This specific area made a difference tonight, as three runs scored from hits with RISP.

The Return of 3

Harper, one of the most redoubtable hitters in Major League Baseball, was set to make his return to the roster in the series opener after missing five straight games following a hit-by-pitch against the Atlanta Braves. Out of those five games, the Phillies dropped four of them, with a sweep by the Milwaukee Brewers.

Not only is Harper a feared hitter, but he also makes a huge impact on this ball club in more ways than home runs. Harper, with an imaginary “C” patch on his chest, is extremely salutary towards the morality of this team, as momentum is an important aspect of baseball.

He certainly set the tone in his first at bat returning from injury, as he followed a Turner home run with a solo-shot of his own to give the Phillies a three-run lead. Though being 0-2 in the count, Harper kept his equanimity and took the next pitch, which happened to be a breaking ball, to right field.

The return of Harper will not be overlooked, as it is essential to this roster’s chance of success.

Bohm Dominates on Both Sides

Bohm, who has already begun to go on an incline, had a night not only at the plate, but in the field as well.

Bohm, who is not known to be the best defensive third baseman, had a great play to get the Phillies out of the third inning and help out Cristopher Sanchez‘s pitch count. Though George Springer thought he beat it out, Bohm displayed his confidence as he knew his play was irrevocable.

In five at-bats in tonight’s game, Bohm had four hits and one run scored. He was able to use all areas of the field to rack up a knock, which is something he tried to force early in this season. Though Bohm will not have four hits every game, tonight’s box score showed his abilities and what he has been able to do in prior years.

Turner Gets Back on Track with a Pair of Home Runs

Prior to tonight, Turner had started to cool off from his hot start, with struggles to see the ball and game-changing errors in the field.

Trea started off the scoring with a two-run home run with two strikes in the count. Not only was he able to leave the yard and set the tone in the game, but he also sent the ball out of the park the other way, something he had not been known to do for the Phillies.

With a base hit in between, Turner ended his night with another home run in the top of the eighth inning, this time to left field. Turner starting off the series with a multi-hit game is crucial, as it tends to carry for the remainder of the series for Trea. As of now, though, two home runs with three RBIs certainly absolved him from unnecessary backlash by fans.

Rookie Mick Abel to Start Game Two

Abel, who struck out nine and gave up no runs against the Pittsburgh Pirates in his Major League debut, will take the hill tomorrow for game two of this three-game series at 7:07 P.M.
