Phillies Comeback To Beat Rockies 9-3 For Fourth Straight Win, Retake First Place In NL East

It’s another win for the Phillies, and they once again lead the National League East.
After picking up a three-game sweep over the Pittsburgh Pirates at home, the Phillies kicked off their seven-game road trip on a good note, defeating the Colorado Rockies 9-3. With the Boston Red Sox picking up a win over the New York Mets, the Phillies now sit at the top of the NL East after sitting in second since April 12.
While the night started slow, the Phillies finally realized they were playing the worst team in baseball and began to put some runs together. Alec Bohm hit the big one, a two-run bomb in the eighth, to take the lead, and clutch hits from Trea Turner and home runs from Kyle Schwarber and Edmundo Sosa sealed the deal.
In the top of the first, the west coast traveling was on display early as Turner and Bryce Harper kicked off the game with two quick outs, but Schwarber walked to put an early runner on. Unfortunately, on the first pitch Nick Castellanos saw, he flew out to right field.
The Rockies then came up for their first at-bats, facing Cristopher Sanchez. Sanchez bested three of Colorado’s first four hitters, striking out three of them. However, Ezequiel Tovar smoked a slider deep into the left field corner for a solo home run to make it 1-0 Rockies.
A single off the bat of Sosa and a walk from Weston Wilson put two runners on with two outs in the second inning for Johan Rojas, but he was bested by Kyle Freeland on three pitches, striking out.
Three groundouts from the Rockies ended their second innings, and in the top of the third, Turner and Harper both singled, but once again weren’t able to pick up any runs. In the bottom half of the inning, the Rockies doubled their lead. With two outs, Jordan Beck turned a soft liner to right into a double after beating the throw from Castellanos, and Tovar singled to right for his second RBI of the night to make it 2-0.
Both teams went scoreless in the fourth, but in the fifth, the Phillies finally got on the board. With one out, Turner smoked a ball down into the right field corner for a triple. Harper then came up next and, with two strikes, poked a single to left field to bring in Turner to make it 2-1.
It only took seven pitches for Sanchez to finish off the Rockies in the fifth, but the Phillies didn’t have success scoring any runs in their half of the sixth. A two-out double by Michael Toglia put a runner on for Colorado in the bottom of the sixth, and one batter later, Brenton Doyle smoked a ball past the diving glove of Wilson, bouncing over the outfield wall for a ground-rule double to make it 3-1. Sanchez was able to get Ryan McMahon to strike out to end the inning.
In the top of the seventh, the Phillies got a run back. Brandon Marsh pinch hit for Rojas and smoked a single to left field. Turner grounded a ball back to the pitcher, Jake Bird, but Bird sailed the throw into right field, allowing Marsh to go to third and put runners on the corners with no outs. Harper then lifted a fly ball to center to score Marsh, but a groundball from Schwarber turned into a double play to end the inning.
Former Phillies first overall pick Mickey Moniak pinch hit to lead off the seventh and smacked a single under the glove of Harper for a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Reliever Joe Ross locked in and got Jacob Stallings to pop out and Beck to ground out to end the inning.
In the top of the eighth, the Phillies blew the game open. Castellanos kicked off the inning with a leadoff single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. With one out, Bohm smoked a slider to deep center field for a go-ahead two-run home run to make it 4-3 Phillies.
The hits didn’t stop there as Sosa smacked his third hit of the night to right, and Marsh singled again to put two runners on base for Turner. Turner smacked another slider, this time for a double to bring in two more runs and make it 6-3 Phillies.
Carlos Hernandez came on for the eighth and sent the Rockies down in order, and in the top of the ninth, the Phillies continued to add on thanks to a few big home runs. The first one came off the bat of Schwarber for his 300th career home run, and it was indeed a Schwarbomb, 466 feet to be exact.
Castellanos then singled to left, but back-to-back outs from J.T. Realmuto and Bohm brought Sosa up. He then smoked a two-run bomb down the left field line for his first home run of the year and his fourth hit of the night to make it 9-3 Phillies.
Tanner Banks came on in the bottom of the ninth to finish off the game. He picked up a strikeout from McMahon and sent the Rockies down in order to end the game, winning 9-3.
