Flyers Take Down Metropolitan Opponent in New York Islanders
Morgan Frost of the Philadelphia Flyers celebrates with Owen Tippett of the Philadelphia Flyers after he scores a goal during the second period when the New York Islanders played the Philadelphia Flyers Thursday, January 16, 2025, at UBS Arena in Elmont, NY. Robert Sabo for NY Post
This is much more like it.
The Flyers extended their point streak to four games tonight with a big win over the New York Islanders. The Flyers have played very well recently and this game was no exception. They did a very good job of bringing energy against one of the best goalies in the league, Ilya Sorokin. They also bounced back from an early defect. These are the type of wins to confirm for the fans that the Flyers are evolving as a team in a positive direction.
Very early on it appeared that everything would be going the Islanders’ way. Bo Horvat scored the first power-play goal in 15 games for New York. The Flyers penalty that put the Islanders on the power play was very questionable, and prior to the goal, there was a no-call that should have ended the power play completely. This put the Flyers immediately on edge, and Joel Farabee seemed to show it the most by taking another Philly penalty less than a minute removed from Horvat’s goal. Thankfully, unlike the first one, this was a penalty that the Flyers were able to kill off.
Nothing much of note would happen in terms of scoring for the rest of the first period. In fact, the only noteworthy moment would be a scary couple of minutes where Travis Konecny went flying into the boards and took some time before getting up on his own. He just missed hitting his head but seemed to have hurt his shoulder on the impact. Thankfully, he would return to the ice before the period was over and seemed to be alright.
Unfortunately, the same could not be said for Ryan Poehling, who had to exit the game early after taking a hit from Maxim Tsyplakov. This is a tough blow for the Flyers, as even when he doesn’t score, Poehling has always brought the energy for the Flyers from the center position. His teammates also did a very good job of making sure Tsyplakov knew that they did not appreciate what he did throughout the game by taking shots at him whenever they got the chance.
I mentioned Joel Farabee earlier. This was his first game back after being a healthy scratch in the previous three games. He made his impact by playing aggressively and picking up that penalty. In the second period, he made an impact on the scoresheet. He earned an assist on a Sean Couturier goal which tied the game for the Flyers at 1-1.
This opened up a scoring barrage for Philly. It started with Garnet Hathaway, who took advantage of a two-on-one breakaway during an Islanders power play, marking his fourth point in the last four games. This also marked only the third shorthanded goal for the Flyers of the year. Philly kept the momentum firmly on their side when less than five minutes later Morgan Frost added to the Flyers’ lead with a tip-in goal to put them on top 3-1.
The Islanders got a much-needed break to start the third when Matthew Barzal turned a sloppy Flyers turnover into a goal to bring New York to within one. The Islanders seemed to have the momentum back on their side for the first five minutes of the third, as even when the Flyers went on the power play the puck was kept mostly in the Philadelphia zone. However, as the power play came to a close, Cam York scored off of a face-off in the Islanders zone, giving the Flyers a two-goal lead once again. Farabee was also able to pick up his second point of the game with an assist on this goal.
As the final buzzer drew closer, the Flyers took a costly penalty, which, coupled with the Islanders pulling their goalie, resulted in a six-on-four advantage for New York. Anders Lee took advantage by once again making this a one-score game at 4-3.
Following the goal the Islanders would again pull their goalie, but this time it would work out in the Flyers, as Noah Cates buried the empty netter to seal the game at 5-3. The Flyers have been trending very strongly in the right direction in 2025 and we hope to see much more of this as the year goes on.
The Flyers’ next game will be against the New Jersey Devils on Saturday, the 18th, at 12:30 pm EST. The game can be watched on NHL Network and NBC Sports Philadelphia.
