Phillies place Edmundo Sosa on 10-day injured list with back spasms
Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports
The Phillies have placed another guy on the injured list.
Edmundo Sosa was placed on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to 9/7, with back spasms prior to Sunday’s game against the Marlins. The Phillies recalled RHP Seth Johnson from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
Johnson will wear No. 51.
The Phillies currently have Alec Bohm (left-hand strain) and Austin Hays (kidney infection) on the 10-day IL. Sosa joins them. J.T. Realmuto is listed as day-to-day with a left knee contusion. Realmuto said his knee feels “much better [Sunday] than [Saturday].” He could play again in a day or two.
Sosa is slashing .264/.319/.437 with a .756 OPS. He has a career-high-tying 30 RBIs in 83 games this season. Sosa has been the Phillies’ guy off the bench this season, so losing him is a problem. He was named the Phillies’ nominee for the MLB Players Alumni Association Heart and Hustle Award this season.
He is eligible to return on September 17, which would be Game 2 of the Phils’ massive series in Milwaukee against the Brewers.
Johnson, 25, was a part of the return of the Gregory Soto trade with the Orioles. Johnson has gone 2-1 with a 1.52 ERA, 0.85 WHIP, 22 strikeouts, walking seven, and a .155 opponents’ batting average across five starts between Double-A Reading and Triple-A Lehigh Valley. He was named the Phillies’ Co-Minor League Pitcher of the Month for August.
Johnson will make his Major League debut Sunday afternoon in Miami. Aramis Garcia will catch for him, making his Phillies debut. Here is the rest of the lineup as the Phillies look for the series win over the Marlins:
Kyle Schwarber LF
Trea Turner SS
Bryce Harper DH
Nick Castellanos RF
Bryson Stott 2B
Kody Clemens 1B
Weston Wilson LF

Aramis Garcia C
