Flyers Rebound With Statement 7-1 Victory Over Jets, 3 Points Away From Clinching Playoffs

The Philadelphia Flyers came into their final road game needing a response and delivered it with a 7-1 win over the Winnipeg Jets. With the magic number down to three points, they played fast, under control, and stayed out of the kind of trouble that cost them in Detroit.

With the Flyers coming into their last road game of the year, they had to put the loss in Detroit behind them and get back to their game. Rick Tocchet mentioned in his pregame press conference that the team must get back to playing Flyers hockey, which is disciplined, under control, and limit the stuff after the whistle, which was a large part of the loss to Detroit, with the majority of their goals coming off of the power play. The loss in Detroit clinched the fact that they will be the only team going into the playoffs without a 4 game winning streak this season.

The first period started slowly, but once the scoring seal was broken, it happened fast. It all started with Porter Martone stealing a puck at the Jets’ blue line, an outlet pass to Travis Konecny, who fed a streaking Martone for an impressive finish. Winnipeg tied it on a Haydn Fleury goal off a rebound from Daniel Vladar, and Matvei Michkov answered back with an impressive goal, and with Sean Couturier scoring 25 seconds later to make it 3-1 in the second.

Travis Sanheim set his career high in goals with 11, adding to the Flyers’ lead. Noah Cates scored his 18th in the second on a 4-goal lead as the second period wound down. Couturier got his second goal in the third period, giving him three points for the game, then Nick Seeler added an insurance goal to make the game 7-1, where the game ended, securing their 23rd road win of the season, the most in a season for the Flyers since 2011-12.

Tocchet Calls for Aggressive Yet Controlled Offense

In his pregame interview, Tocchet was asked what the message was to his Flyers team after the loss in Detroit, and his answer was a simple one: “It’s like any game, but especially now, you got to really be under control. You want to be aggressive, but you want to get to the net.”

It appears that the message was well received. Martone in particular heard the message loud and clear.

In the first goal of the game, Martone made an aggressive defensive play that resulted in a turnover, passed the puck up ice to Konecny, and got up the ice quickly and stormed the net. This gave Konecny the opportunity to get the attention of Jets goaltender Connor Hellebuyck, and with a perfect pass to Martone on Hellebuyck’s right, he had no chance of stopping. This was a huge 7th point for Martone in his 7th game, only behind Mike Richards, who had 8 points in 2005-06

This was exactly what Tocchet was talking about pre-game, and this set the tone early for a three-goal period for the Flyers. That one small tweak to the Flyers’ offense made a massive difference because all three of the first-period goals were created by the pressure that Tocchet asked for.

Vladar Recovers From Bad Outing Like an MVP

Against Detroit, Vladar had one of his worst games since coming back from the Olympic break at one of the worst possible times for the Flyers. To restart momentum in their last road game of the year, he would have to play a cleaner game and capture momentum early. After the Flyers’ first goal of the game, the Jets stormed back, and Fleury cleaned up a bobbled puck on Vladar’s glove side and snuck it past to tie the game. The Flyers’ netminder refocused, and when Winnipeg tried to go back to the glove side, Vladar clamped down and handled rebounds much cleaner, leading to the return of the calm that he has brought to the Flyers all season.

Vladar got better as the game went on. This was something that we see when Vladar is at his best. This game was more than just a recovery from the Detroit game; it was a chance for him to assert his dominance again, and he definitely did just that. This was the kind of game that we have come to expect from Vladar, where his lateral movement was on full display. In Detroit, that was a bit of an issue, and ultimately what caused the lapses that led to a bad night, but all of these issues were cured in Winnipeg, giving the Flyers’ offense a chance to stay aggressive in the neutral zone.

Flyers Play Hard and Reap Rewards

The Flyers came out from the beginning with an intensity and, more importantly, a structure that we never saw in the Detroit game. They played with more discipline than they did against the Red Wings, and they played the type of hockey that Tocchet asked for pregame. They played Flyers hockey. Nobody personified this as much as Couturier. The Flyers captain stayed active all game and was rewarded with three points, two goals, and an assist. This game was just another example of how well this squad is playing down the stretch. They’ve only lost consecutive games one time since Feb. 26 and have a 16-6-1 record in that time.

Mindset has a huge role in this win. After scoring his 18th goal of the season between periods, Sanheim would address how important this is: “I think just the mindset, trying to keep it simple, play hard. We’re getting rewarded. So obviously didn’t like our effort the other night. It’s been great so far.”

This is the mindset that the Flyers needed to recover against a team that is fighting for their playoff lives. Winnipeg has been a place where the Flyers have liked playing, going 4-0-0 over their last 4 games there, and outscoring the Jets 14-2 in those games. This confidence builder is important, with them welcoming the Carolina Hurricanes to South Philly, with the Hurricanes likely limiting the minutes of their top players as a precautionary measure, giving the Flyers a better chance at those much-needed points.
