Weston Wilson has been a quality bat for the Phillies since he got called up from the minors this year. Tonight he let the whole world know just how good he can be and hit for the Cycle. We’ll get into how good he’s been, but first a brief breakdown of the night.
Another day, another quality performance from Wheels
Zack Wheeler was lights out tonight against a mediocre Nationals offense. As he continues to build his CY Young case, he pitched 6 innings tonight allowing just 1 ER and 6 strikeouts as well. You’d be surprised to learn that throughout his career, he has an ERA of 4.59 against the Nationals so it was a relieving performance.
Wheels was great tonight, but let’s get into the man of the hour.
Weston Wilson.
Weston Wilson is part of what makes this team so good
2 times in 19 years. That’s how many cycles the Phillies have hit since 2005. Just 2. Weston Wilson joins rare air in not only Phillies history but all of MLB lore.
He joins J.T. Realmuto, David Bell, Gregg Jefferies, Johnny Callison, Chuck Klein (twice!), Cy Williams, Sam Thompson, and Lave Cross as all the Phillies to ever hit for the Cycle.
Weston Wilson is now hitting .342 and has been one of the best bench bats for the Phillies this season. He’s part of what has made this team so elite. Guys like him and Edmundo Sosa, being as good as they are coming off the bench add an unmatched level of depth to the team that’s hard to find anywhere else.
Wislon’s slash line is a respectable .342/.350/.684, for a guy who’s coming off the bench and has only played 24 MLB games his whole career, not bad. He’s sent 3 balls into the stands and totals 7RBIs.
One of the Phillies’ biggest problems early last year was depth. When Bryce Harper was still recovering from his injury, Jake Cave wasn’t exactly filling the gap. When you have quality players like Weston Wilson like Edmundo Sosa who aren’t even everyday guys, it takes an enormous amount of pressure off of starters.
It especially helps with the outfield. With Austin Hays added from Baltimore, the Phillies have 5 quality guys who can play in the outfield on any given day.
