A battle of the Titans had its first of 3 games and for Rob Thomson and company, it couldn’t have gone any better.
With Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber making their return, hopes were high that the Phillies could rebound from their disappointing series against the Braves, and they did.
Dodgers pitching gets shelled
Bobby Miller got the nod for game 1 of the series, he had already been shaky at best, and with the MV3 returning we should have known the offense was going to have itself a night.
Bobby Miller didn’t make it past the 4th inning with his final line being 4.0 IP, 10 H, 9 ER, 3 BB, 2 K.
3 home runs helped blow open the floodgates for the Phillies the first coming from all-star Short Stop Trea Turner, who hit a 354-foot grand slam to bury the Dodgers in an 8-0 hole.
Not long after that, Bryson Stott hit a solo HR of his own to bump the lead up to 9-0.
After a 3-inning drought, fan-favorite Brandon Marsh would claim his homerun to give us what would be our final score of 10-1.
Cy Young Wheeler?
Zack Wheeler has been exceptional this season and was going into arguably his biggest challenge yet with this Dodgers lineup.
Against the third-ranked offense in terms of run scored, Wheeler’s final line was 5.0 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 7 K.
Thomson opted to remove him from the game in the 5th out of an abundance of caution from concerns surrounding lower back tightness. He said postgame that he expects to make his next start on Sunday.
Seranthony Dominguez, Gregory Soto, Orion Kerkering, and Jose Ruiz each pitched an inning in relief and got the job done. The combined final line for the bullpen tonight was 4.0 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 3 BB, 3 K.
