The 76ers had two major goals in free agency in 2024.
- Sign Paul George
- Extend Tyrese Maxey
In roughly 5:30 hours, they completed both.
The 76ers and Maxey agreed in principle on a five-year, $204 million maximum contract extension. ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski first reported the news and said the contract is fully guaranteed with no options.
The NBA’s Most Improved Player for the 2023-24 season averaged 25.9 points, 6.2 assists, and 3.7 rebounds, earning him an All-Star nod. He averaged nearly 30 points a game in the Sixers’ six-game first-round playoff loss to the Knicks. Oh, and do not forget, he is only 23 years old.
Maxey was eligible for a rookie extension last offseason, but the Sixers chose not to pay him so that they could preserve as much cap space as possible for this offseason, which enabled them to give the max to George and Maxey.
Maxey somehow fell to 21st in the 2020 NBA draft. Those other 20 teams must be kicking themselves because the Sixers have secured the future face of the franchise for his prime years.
The Sixers late Sunday night into Monday morning signed Eric Gordon to a one-year, minimum deal, and resigned Kelly Oubre Jr. to a two-year, $16.3 million deal. The deal includes a player option for the 2025-2026 season.
