Bryce Harper, Kyle Schwarber hit 10-day IL, avoid anything serious

The news we were all anticipating came Friday afternoon, but it was better than expected.
The Phillies have placed Bryce Harper (left hamstring strain) and Kyle Schwarber (left groin strain) on the 10-day injured list.
They also returned Kody Clemens from his rehab assignment in Triple-A Lehigh Valley and reinstated him from the 10-day. They also recalled Johan Rojas from Lehigh Valley.
The good news, though, Harper and Schwarber both avoided serious injuries. Both were injured in Thursday night’s loss to the Marlins. Schwarber left the game in the top of the ninth with left groin soreness. He felt his groin tighten on a play in left field in the eighth.
“I reached down to grab the ball barehanded and kind of planted for the throw and felt it grab,” Schwarber said postgame. “I thought it was just a cramp at first and I finished the inning. But, as I was running in (between innings) I could still kind of feel it, so I talked to the trainer and he didn’t like where the spot was… so he wanted to get me out of there.”
Harper hurt himself running up the baseline on a ground out to the second baseman on the last play of the game, felt his hamstring grab, immediately grasped it, and started to limp. He went right into the clubhouse with a trainer.
“I don’t know. I haven’t really felt something like this before. It hurts,” Harper said. “We’re going to see what imaging looks like tomorrow and go from there.”
Harper was announced as the National League’s top All-Star vote-getter during Thursday’s game with 3,277,920 votes to secure the start at first base and his eighth All-Star selection.
Could he play in that game? Maybe.
There is a good chance that Harper and Schwarber return before the All-Star break, according to Rob Thomson. The Phillies did not disclose the grade of the strain, but Harper’s is similar to Brandon Marsh‘s, who missed two weeks, and less serious than Trea Turner‘s, who missed six. The earliest they can return is against the Dodgers on July 9. That would give them up to six games before the break.
Harper said he will try to get back as soon as he can. He is bummed about missing time but is relieved that it is not as serious.
“They pretty much said it’s the best thing it can be at this point,” Harper said Friday.
