The Phillies hit 29 triples in 2023, which was seventh-best in all of Major League Baseball.

While this is cool, Beth Overmier, Nolan Snyder, and the Phandemic Krew are making the most exciting play in baseball more exciting in 2024 by honoring their late mother/grandmother, Bette, by donating $100 to the Pennsylvania SPCA with their fundraiser, Bette’s Triples.

Bette passed away last November due to long-term consequences of chemotherapy. She resiliently battled cancer three times beginning in 2012. Through this struggle, she was still able to share love and care with her family, the Phillies, and animals.

“She was an avid Phillies fan,” Overmier, Bette’s daughter, said. “We took her to as many games as we could right up until the end.

Bette was a long-time donor to the PSPCA and along with her love for the Fightins, she cherished animals as well.

“She just adored animals,” Overmier said. We had cats and dogs growing up. We raised and bred guinea pigs when [Overmier’s family] lived in Ohio. Always had some sort of four-legged creature running around the house.

“I just thought this would be something she would be proud of and if she was still with she’d still be contributing.”

When her mother passed, Overmier wanted to continue her legacy by donating.

“She donated to several charities, but I know that the SPCA was near and dear to her heart.”

The whole idea of running a massive campaign was not the original idea, but rather something that popped into Overmier’s head when talking to her son, Nolan.

“Nolan and I were talking one night, and I said let’s have some fun with this and incorporate her love of the Phillies with donating to the SPCA.”

The two did some research, trying to find some trends on how to donate, and they landed on triples. So, they landed on the idea of $100 to the SPCA per Phillies triple in the regular and postseason. Except when Kyle Schwarber records a three-bagger, it is $500. Schwarber has 12 triples in his 10-year career, with just one in 2023.

And a triple is perfect, as Bette fought cancer three times.

“It kinda just grew from that,” Overmier said. “We reached out to the Phandemic Krew and Greg Taylor, who is the advertising guru behind this project. And it’s just kind of taken off.”

“[The Phandemic Krew] have been such a big support system for us,” Snyder said. “The fact that we have had a couple of Krew members donate to our fundraiser has just been great for us, it’s been great for the fundraiser.”

“Brett [Macminn] and Oscar [Alvarado] both embrace this,” Overmier said. They’ve been really helpful… It’s taken a village, but I’m glad I got the village.”

Macminn and Alvarado founded the Phandemic Krew in 2020. When no fans could come into the ballpark, they built a community outside the fences with airhorns and noisemakers, trying to make something so abnormal feel normal. They now reside at the top of section 301 at Citizens Bank Park.

“This has just blossomed into something amazing and beautiful,” Snyder said.

Through three games, Bette’s Triples has recorded $2,075 in donations, with still zero triples on the year. Overmier says she has been recognized at Citizens Bank Park a few times by people she did not even know.

“I think it is a lot of word of mouth and being out there in the public… It was great to see donations coming from people who aren’t in our immediate circle. I just want to thank all of [the donors].”

Overmier plans to attend all 81 home games and the two in London with their banner, promoting the cause.

When asked how she would think her mother Bette would think of everything she doing, Overmier got choked up.

“She would be so happy and so proud, especially for the involvement of Nolan. I know she wished she could be down here watching the Phillies, but she’s cheering us on from above. She’s probably beside herself.”
