After John Tortorella’s ejection from Saturday night’s 7-0 beatdown by the Tampa Bay Lightning in Florida, the Flyers will be without their head coach for their next two games.
Tortorella has been suspended for two games and fined $50,000 for his outburst, though Comcast Spectacor CEO Dan Hilferty revealed Sunday that he would pay the fine.
Tortorella will miss the Flyers’ games against the San Jose Sharks on Tuesday and the Toronto Maple Leafs on Thursday. Both games are at home.
“I’m really proud of Torts for standing up for his/our team,” Hilferty said. “This New Era of Orange is about having each other’s backs. Last night, Torts had our collective backs… I respect any action the league might feel is need to take but if it includes a fine, I am paying it.”
Tortorella was not pleased with a tripping penalty given to Ronnie Attard in the first period. Right after, Brayden Point scored a powerplay goal to give the Lightning team a 4-0 lead, causing Tortorella to go insane on referee Wes McCauley and his crew with words I cannot put in this story.
Tortorella was ejected but refused to leave the bench.
He eventually exited but made sure to get his final thoughts out there.
The NHL said the reason for the suspension and fine was, “For unprofessional conduct directed at the officials by refusing to leave the bench area after being assessed a game misconduct.”
From the Flyers’ standpoint, they thought Tortorella’s comments to the officials were not “too far.” Brad Shaw, who filled in for the rest of the game as head coach, said that “he was expressing his dissatisfaction with the calls.”
The NHL obviously disagreed.
