Jalen Hurts has been undergoing tests for days. A superficial blood clot was discovered in his calf Saturday in London, and a follow-up ultrasound on Wednesday revealed that the clot had moved, placing him on injured reserve Saturday.
Now, a day after the Eagles’ 25-14 loss to the Carolina Panthers, Hurts has been diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis and bilateral pulmonary emboli after further testing. The 28-year-old is clinically stable and will be on blood thinners, preventing him from participating in football activities. His prognosis is “very good,” with a full recovery and no long-term effects expected, per his agent, Nicole Lynn.
Hurts is expected to miss a minimum of three months, ending his season.

Here is the full joint statement from the Eagles and Lynn:
“Over the last few days, Jalen Hurts has received comprehensive medical evaluations by physician experts. In the interest of transparency, we are providing additional information on the diagnosis and treatment plan related to his condition.
“Jalen was initially diagnosed by specialists in London with a left calf superficial vein thrombosis. After further testing and monitoring, the current diagnosis is a deep vein thrombosis, as well as bilateral pulmonary emboli. He is clinically stable and has no significant functional limitations. His treatment should only involve anticoagulation (i.e. *blood thinners”).
“During this time, he will not be allowed to participate in any contact activities, including football.
Jalen’s prognosis is very good, and we expect a full recovery.
“We anticipate that he will have the opportunity to resume contact football activities when off the blood thinners.

“In the meantime, he will remain active around the team and continue to condition. More importantly, we anticipate that he will have no long-term effects.
“We are thinking of Jalen and looking forward to a strong recovery.”
After initially being diagnosed with a superficial blood clot in London and staying in the hospital until 4 a.m., doctors told Hurts not to sleep as a precaution. He was awake for roughly 36 hours and still started against the Jacksonville Jaguars last week, going 21-for-40 in the 19-17 loss, throwing for 220 and a touchdown, and being sacked once for a 77.1 rating. He only rushed twice for two yards in the Eagles’ lowest rushing performance as a team since 2015.
Hurts this season completed 57.8% of his passes for 933 yards, eight touchdowns, and three interceptions, posting a QBR of 56.5.
Without Hurts on Sunday, the Eagles started backup Tanner McKee in a 25-14 loss to the Panthers. McKee will remain the Eagles starter going forward.
