It was not a great night for the Phillies offense and an even worse night for the Cristopher Sanchez Cy Young campaign.
The 2026 NL Cy Young race has been a story of two pitchers, Sanchez of the Phillies and Jacob Misiorowski of the Brewers. Unfortunately, the two weren’t lined up to face each other in the teams’ series in Milwaukee, but Misiorowski got the first shot to face the opposing team’s hitter, and he made the most of it.
Misiorowski finished the night tossing 15 strikeouts in a complete-game shutout for the first time in his young career. Misiorowski faced the minimum in his outing, allowing just one hit, a single from Kyle Schwarber in the fourth, but he was able to get him out on a double play.
It’s the first time a pitcher has pitched the minimum against the Phillies since Gary Waslewski in 1969, and the first time the Phillies have struck out 15 times to a single pitcher since Max Scherzer in 2018. It was also done in under 100 pitches for a Maddoux.

Misiorowski got to work right away against the Phillies, attacking the top of the order, striking out Schwarber, Trea Turner and Bryce Harper on 12 pitches. The Phillies trotted out Tanner Banks to start the game as an opener against the lefty-heavy Brewers’ top of the order.
The opener spot didn’t seem to work as Banks walked the leadoff man, Christian Yelich, to start the bottom of the first but struck out Jackson Chourio and Brice Turang. With two outs, Banks couldn’t make it a scoreless inning as William Contreras smoked a double to right center field, making it a 1-0 Milwaukee lead.
Following a walk to Jake Bauer, Banks was able to get Andrew Vaughn to fly out to end the first. While the first inning was long, following a walk to Bauer, Banks was able to get Andrew Vaughn to fly out to end the first. While the first inning was long, Misiorowski didn’t break a sweat, striking out two more batters in the second.
Andrew Painter walked out to make his unofficial start on the night, but the Brewers nabbed another run in the second. Garrett Mitchell led off the inning with a single, moved up 90 feet on a sac bunt, another 90 on a groundout, and came home on a pass ball to double the Brewers’ lead.
The Miz flew through the third, striking out all three batters once again, for eight strikeouts in the first three innings. In the fourth, Schwarber smoked a first-pitch fastball over the middle of the plate for the first Phillies hit of the game. However, the base hit became null as Turner struck out on three terrible swings, and Harper grounded into a double play after not running to first base.

Painter ran into trouble in the bottom half of the fourth as he allowed a walk and an error from Turner put two runners on, but Painter worked around it, getting David Hamilton and Joey Ortiz to strike out. While he got out of the fourth unscathed, the fifth didn’t go the same way.
Yelich and Jackson Chourio recorded two quick outs to open the inning, but Brice Turang doubled down the left field line, and Contreras walked, putting two runners on for Jake Bauers. Bauers didn’t wait long to get into his count against Painter as he lifted a first-pitch sweeper to left center field for a three-run home run, making it 5-0 Milwaukee.
Down five runs, the Phillies offense continued to flounder against Misiorowski, going down in order again, and Milwaukee added another run in the sixth on an RBI single from Chourio.
Misiorowski continued to coast through the seventh and eighth innings, picking up a strikeout in each inning and making Phillies batters look silly in each frame. In the ninth, sitting at just 85 pitches, Misiorowski went back out to close things out for the complete game shutout and the Maddoux.
Gabriel Rincones Jr., who was making his debut, went down on one pitch, J.T. Realmuto grounded out, and Justin Crawford couldn’t catch up to a single pitch in his at-bat, going down on strikes for Misiorowski’s 15th strikeout on the night, completing the shutout and lifting the Brewers to a 6-0 series-opening win.
