The 76ers are hiring former Cleveland Cavaliers general manager Mike Gansey as their new president of basketball operations. Gansey was with the Cavs’ organization since 2011, rose through the ranks, and was the general manager under Cleveland president Koby Altman since 2022.

ESPN’s Shams Charania first reported the news.

The 76ers fired former president Daryl Morey on May 12 following a second-round sweep at the hands of the New York Knicks, who are now in the NBA Finals after sweeping Gansey’s former team, the Cavs, in the Eastern Conference Finals. Bob Myers, president of sports for Harris Blitzer Sports and Entertainment, led the search for the next leader of the Sixers’ front office. Myers will work in partnership with Gansey and assist in his vision for the organization.

Morey’s tenure was filled with excellent drafting and development, but disappointing endings, poor in-season acquisitions, and inadequate team building led to his demise after six seasons.

Gansey has helped Cleveland become a contender in the Eastern Conference. In doing so, Cleveland has pressed some major buttons, making trades to acquire Donovan Mitchell and James Harden. Before that, the 43-year-oldplayed college basketball for two seasons at St. Bonaventure and two at West Virginia, and was named the NBA G League (then D-League) Executive of the Year for the 2016-17 season while serving as the general manager of the Cavaliers’ affiliate, the Cleveland (formerly Canton) Charge.

It will be an interesting first offseason for Gansey in Philadelphia. The Sixers hold the 22nd overall pick for June 23’s draft, and then decisions on team options, free agents, and potential trades will follow.
