The Phillies are starting to look dangerous again, and Sunday’s 6-0 win over the Rockies showed why, with Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper setting the tone early while Cristopher Sanchez kept Colorado chasing all afternoon.

The Phils showed off their power early against Rockies starter Tomoyuki Sugano with back-to-back solo home runs in the first inning off the bats of Schwarber and Harper, making it quickly 2-0. In the next inning, the Phils manufactured two more runs in front of Schwarber, who hit his second home run in back-to-back innings, making it 5-0.

The Phils scored another run in the bottom of the sixth, with the pitching staff stymying the Rockies’ bats all game, giving the Phils the 6-0 win and closing out their fourth straight series win.

Middle of the Lineup is Heating Up

Both Schwarber and Harper started the season slowly, and there was a bit of concern about the power output of the Phillies’ star hitters. When they weren’t hitting the ball well, the Phillies’ offense followed their stars and wasn’t dynamic like it has been since Don Mattingly took over managerial duties in late April. Both Schwarber and Harper were going to the plate tighter and swinging at bad pitches, and since Mattingly took over, both have selected pitches much better, and this has made a huge change in how well the Phils have hit the ball, but particularly the middle of the lineup.

Schwarber had a great game with the two home runs, his fourth straight game with a homer, and a solid single. This momentum is something that both can carry into the series against Boston, which has had some issues with its pitching staff of late. This is something that the entire lineup can do, but they tend to take their cues from their stars, and it has worked out well so far.

Sanchez Continues Dealing

The last three starts by Sanchez have been getting progressively more dominant, and that can be attributed to how well he has established his secondary pitches in each game. In his last game against the Athletics, he established the slider, and it made his other pitches so much more dominant. Against the Rockies, the scouting report is to keep them guessing with pitch speed, which keeps their young hitters off time with their swings.

This limited his pitch count to the sixth inning at 65, despite a high-stress second inning. This would help the Phils’ bullpen get some rest after two games in a row having to cover more than half the game. He had a shaky seventh, but he powered through it. After getting to runners on, he tried to lean on the slider, and the break wasn’t there because he hadn’t established it early. After returning to his changeup and throwing it off of the fastball, he got the last out and capped off his successful Mother’s Day outing, running his current scoreless streak to 20-2/3 innings.

Duran Closes the Game Quietly

Jhoan Duran is not only a huge part of the Phils bullpen plans this season, but he’s also the cause for the ninth inning being as close to automatic as possible. Mattingly has been careful with how he has brought Duran back into the mix, with alternating appearances and days off. This has allowed him to not only build a rhythm but also build strength, which looks to be on the horizon.

His first pitch in the game hit 100 mph at the top of the zone. Against Mickey Moniak, he let his fastball breathe a bit more, hitting his top speed of the season so far at 101.7 mph, which just missed, but two pitches later, he decided to end the game with a 101.2 mph fastball above the zone, which Moniak had no chance of catching up with, ending this all-around team win with next to no drama.

The Phillies are off on Monday, but will have Zack Wheeler on the mound at Fenway Park Tuesday night to keep the good times going.

Balancing love for Philly and Bay Area sports teams may seem impossible, we can all agree that the Cowboys are the true evil.
