There’s no question that a 98-point season for the Philadelphia Flyers and a playoff clinch is a special season, but it becomes even more special, as the Flyers were able to get their star player on the board in three straight games. After an outstanding rookie season and a roller coaster of a sophomore season, the Flyers cannot be more grateful to get their former seventeenth overall pick hot right before the playoffs.
Matvei Michkov, whose goal Tuesday night brought his total up to 20 goals on the season, did not look like he was going to reach that total at a time this year. In his first 10 games, Michkov had only one goal and four assists for five points. Five points in 10 games is not horrible, but for a caliber player like Michkov, the Flyers were expecting a lot more after having 26 goals and 37 assists for 63 points in his rookie year.
November went better for the young star, as in 14 games, Michkov tallied seven goals but only had two assists. Although he only assisted on two goals, his seven goals of his own were a massive improvement for Michkov. Michkov would go back to his struggles, which concerned the Flyers and the fans, as many wondered what happened after such a great rookie season.

This season, Michkov led the team in penalty minutes with 71. Michkov, with a 5’10” and 172-pound frame, was not meant to sit in the box. He is the type of player meant to rip the puck and use his speed to open up the ice. Not only does Michkov have a great wrist shot, but he can also fool the goaltender when all alone. While he is in the box serving a penalty, he’s taking away his own minutes where he could be on the offensive side.
This trend would stick with him after the Olympic break, as Michkov’s March would really raise the concern, as in 15 games, Michkov only scored one goal, but racked up 14 penalty minutes. Things weren’t changing, and time was running out on the season.

After the talk throughout the season of Michkov entering the year out of shape, when it seemed to be at its worst, he would end up getting back to his game when the team needed him most during the rush to the playoffs. Michkov would end his April and regular season with 11 points in eight games, showing signs of hope for the 21-year-old. With a shooting percentage of 20 percent, Michkov was firing the puck left and right, and when it mattered most.
To finish off his regular season, Michkov went on a three-game goal streak, where he would also tally three assists in the span. Even though the Flyers had beaten the Winnipeg Jets 7-1, it would be Michkov’s goal in the first period that would end up being the game-winning goal, as his wrist shot made it a 2-1 game, which led to the team taking flight past the Jets. Michkov is embracing the culture this team is playing for, as he would continue to boost confidence and get the Flyers on the board after the team went down 2-0 to the Carolina Hurricanes in the clinching game. In the second period, Michkov opened the scoring for the Flyers after finally solving Hurricanes goaltender Brandon Bussi. The Flyers would build off of this and tie the game on the power play a few minutes later. The Flyers won the game in a shootout and punched their ticket to the playoffs. A lot went down to lead to the victory, but it was Michkov’s goal that started it all for the Flyers.
Then on Tuesday, Michkov ended his regular season on its highest note with a goal and two assists.

Flyers’ head coach Rick Tocchet, who has seen the entire journey of Michkov this season, is very satisfied with the way Michkov has dialed himself in as of late. Tocchet credits Michkov’s recent success to the fact that when he can apply the information and get everything to click together, Michkov’s confidence and speed rise drastically. In a season full of learning curves, everything has finally paid off.
“I think [Michkov’s] getting information,” Tocchet said after the Flyers’ 4-2 win over Montreal on Tuesday. “He’s starting to understand it and apply it. I think, early on, maybe he didn’t understand it as much and maybe got frustrated.”
Tocchet has a great understanding of the kid and his emotions, which is why the trust he’s had for Michkov throughout the season means a lot for a club based on culture. Tocchet explains how Michkov applies the information and gives a perfect game example.
“Perfect example tonight,” Tocchet noted. “[Michkov] goes out to the point, they pass the puck, he follows the puck, the pointman gets the shot … if you looked in the third, he stopped and dove and got the puck out. Those are the gains you’re looking for.”
Even in a game after the Flyers clinched the playoffs, Tocchet continues to monitor the development of his 21-year-old winger. Pointing out the gains Michkov has made this season on the 200-foot game says a lot about Tocchet’s goals and ideology of the crest. Tocchet never wanted any conflicts with Michkov; he wanted him to play for the crest, for his team, and Michkov has surely ended his regular season with that in his heart.
After earning the first star of game 82 in front of the orange out in South Philadelphia, Matvei Michkov’s story looks a whole lot different now than it did halfway through the season. The Flyers are in the playoffs, and on top of the talent that got them there, their young star is back to playing like a star, and gets to see the postseason with his teammates after finishing the year with 51 points. It may have started out slow, but Michkov is back and hot going into the postseason.
