Flyers Grab Crucial Overtime Win in Anaheim but Make It Hard Again

The Flyers got the two points they had to have in Anaheim, but the way they got them said plenty about where this team still stands with the season winding down. They found enough offense to survive, but the same issues that have followed them for weeks still showed up, from a lack of shooting volume to another late lead that nearly got away.
The California trip started in Anaheim, and Wednesday night was essentially a must-win game, as they all are at this point. Especially in the position the Flyers are in, sitting 8 points out of a playoff spot, they control their own destiny. The Flyers and Ducks players always play a physical game, and this was another one where quite a few players got a chance to get a bit of revenge against their former teams.
In the first period, Luke Glendening netted his first goal with the Flyers on a one-timer from Cam York behind the net. It was an incredible bang-bang shot that set the tone early. Owen Tippett extended the lead in the second on a tip-in past Lukas Dostal. Tippett was in the right spot because of his hustle and grit, and it paid off.

As the second period was closing out, Cutter Gauthier took a pass from Pavel Mintyukov on the power play and got a nice shot which clanged off the top of the post, where Daniel Vladar had no chance of saving, pulling the Ducks to within one. The score stayed there until 2 minutes in the third period, when Joel Quenneville pulled Dostal for the extra attacker, and Leo Carlsson stormed the net after Vladar couldn’t corral a Gauthier shot, tying the game.
In overtime, it was back and forth until Noah Cates put a shot on goal from behind the net that snuck past Dostal. There was a little drama at the end when Toronto initiated a replay review to make sure Matvei Michkov was onside during the rush that led to the OT winner. He was, and that ended the game, 3-2 with the Flyers getting the ever-important second point.
Anyone But That Guy
If there was one player Flyers fans didn’t want to see score tonight, it was Gauthier, because the reaction to him is never going to be neutral after the way everything unfolded. From the moment it became clear he did not want to be in Philadelphia, leaving the team with the only option to not burn a 5th overall pick by trading him, the fans went from excited to have the talented winger in the Flyers’ system to an ugly breakup that left everyone wondering where things went wrong. The trade became about more than hockey, and every game against Anaheim now carries that extra weight.
That is what made his goal in the second sting more than a normal one would, because it was not just Anaheim getting on the board, it was the player tied to one of the most uncomfortable chapters in the recent history that this franchise has had to deal with. It also does not help that Gauthier has already found ways to make his presence felt against the Flyers since the 2024 deal that brought Jamie Drysdale to Philadelphia, which only adds more frustration every time these teams meet. Tonight was just another chapter in this beef, which shows no sign of slowing up.

Shooting Volume Is Starting to Become a Concern
The Flyers are getting to the point in the season where their lack of shooting is starting to cause concern, because they are asking for perfection from an offense that has been under fire all season. Of all of the teams in the hunt for the playoffs, the Flyers are at a -14 goal differential. There are too many stretches where they look more interested in finding the ideal play than in creating pressure, and when you are fighting for your playoff life, passing up chances in search of a cleaner look is a great way to stagnate an offense that is having trouble scoring as it is.
That is what makes this so frustrating: it’s not just about a low shot total on a stat sheet; it is about a team making life easier for opposing goalies when the margin for error is already thin. At the moment, the Flyers don’t have the kind of elite finishing that can afford to be selective for long stretches, so when they stop funneling pucks toward the net, they end up starving themselves of rebounds, broken plays, greasy goals, and all the ugly offense teams need this time of year to survive. Tonight’s OT winner was a perfect example of why just getting pucks at the net is so important.
The Inability to Close Out Games Returns
The most damaging habit the Flyers have right now might be how they handle late leads, because too often the game stops being about finishing the job and starts about surviving it. Tonight, when the Ducks pulled Dostal for the extra attacker, the Flyers looked unprepared and out of place on defensive rotations. This led directly to the game-tying goal. Instead of staying on the attack and forcing the other team to keep defending, they back up, lose their bite, and let momentum slide the wrong way, which is exactly what happened again tonight when a winnable game started slipping out of their hands.
That is why this keeps feeling bigger than a blown lead: it is becoming part of the team’s identity in the worst possible way, showing up at the worst possible time. Good teams close games by staying composed with the puck, getting clean clears, using the forecheck to keep opponents from spending the final minutes trapped in their own zone, and hoping to hold on and survive. The Flyers keep turning those moments into panic, and every time they do it, they make it harder to believe they can hold up under real pressure when the games matter most.
