The Philadelphia Eagles finally have an offensive coordinator.
After a long and excruciating wait, the Eagles have hired former Green Bay Packers quarterbacks coach Sean Mannion as the team’s next offensive coordinator. Mannion replaces the former Eagles playcaller, Kevin Patullo, who was relieved of his play-calling duties after one season.
The Eagles were historically bad on offense in 2025 under Patullo, ranking in the bottom 10 in the NFL in total offense, passing offense, and third-down offense, while also dropping to the middle of the pack in rushing offense. That doesn’t seem that terriible but when you compare them to the 2024 Eagles, who ranked in the top 10 in all of those stats, and #1 in rushing offense behind a 2000-yard rushing season from Saquon Barkley, you have a problem.

The offense struggled all season long, constantly putting the Eagles in terrible situations, leading to five losses in the final eight games of the year, including a 23-19 home playoff loss to the 49ers.
Mannion, 33, is one of the fastest-rising coaches in the NFL, having reached offensive coordinator status just three years after playing in the league. Before the NFL, Mannion spent four years at Oklahoma State, throwing for 13,600 yards, which ranks 19th all-time in NCAA history. That success helped him get drafted in the third round, 89th overall in the 2015 NFL draft by the then St. Louis Rams.
Mannion spent his entire rookie contract with the Rams, mainly backing up quarterback Jared Goff. Following his fourth year with the Rams, Mannion bounced around, doing three different stints with the Minnesota Vikings and Seattle Seahawks, before retiring at 30 years old. Right after retiring, he secured an offensive assistant job with his former offensive coordinator in Los Angeles, Matt LaFleur. After one year as an offensive assistant, Mannion was promoted to quarterbacks coach in 2025, working with Jordan Love and the rest of the Packers QB room.
While on paper this doesn’t seem like a huge splash move that the Eagles were reportedly trying to make, Mannion is a home run hire for an Eagles team desperate for a revamped offense. While he hasn’t called plays before, Mannion has played for many of the top offensive playcallers in the league, Sean McVay, Matt LaFleur, and Kevin O’Connell, to name a few.

Coming from the McVay tree is something many teams try to do, as they feel learning under McVay brings a huge advantage. The Eagles desperately need a new chain of thought when it comes to offensive playmaking and playcalling, and with Mannion, they can get just that.
The downside to this hire is that Mannion is seen as someone who is on his way to becoming a head coach, and if the Eagles are successful on offense in 2026, it could be another one-and-done situation. While that may be true, the Eagles are in the middle of needing to win now with the core offensive players they have, and if they only get one year out of Mannion, so be it.
Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni released a statement following the hire of Mannion, stating that he’s a bright young coach with a tremendous future ahead of him in this league and was impressed by his systematic views on offensive football and his strategic approach.
