The Phillies have made a move, just not the one they thought they were going to make.

After losing out on former Blue Jays shortstop Bo Bichette to the Mets, the Philadelphia Phillies have pivoted to plan B, resigning J.T. Realmuto to a 3-year, $45 million deal, keeping the catcher in Philadelphia through the 2028 season. Realmuto can earn up to $60 million total with incentives.

This is not the move that the Phillies were likely trying to make today, as just last night, the team offered Bichette a 7-year, $200 million deal, which they assumed he would sign at some point today. Instead, the Mets, who lost out on outfielder Kyle Tucker after he signed with the Dodgers, pivoted to Bichette and offered him $13.5 million more annually than the Phillies, agreeing to a 3-year, $126 million deal.

All offseason long, there have been reports that Realmuto and the Phillies have had multiple conversations about getting a contract done, but things have stalled, and the Phillies began looking into some of the top available free agents. Once the last top guy in Bichette went, the Phillies instantly went back to Realmuto, securing that their star catcher wasn’t leaving the City of Brotherly Love.

With this deal, Realmuto will remain a Phillie until he is at least 38, where in the final year of his new deal, he will play his 10th year with the club. If he can make it to 2028, he’ll be the 193rd player to play 10 years or more with the Phillies. Relamuto was acquired just a month before the Phillies made their historic signing of Bryce Harper.

In the seven seasons that Realmuto has played in Philadelphia, 121 home runs and 434 RBIs while batting .265. He’s earned two All-Star nods, two gold gloves, two silver sluggers, and has finished in the top 15 of MVP voting twice.

The big sweetener with Relamuto has been his consistency behind the plate since coming to Philadelphia. Relamuto has been arguably the best defensive catcher over the past decade, as he nears the top ranks of throwouts and pop time in the entire MLB. Multiple pitchers over the years have credited Relamuto with being the best catcher that has ever caught for them.
