With less than a week until the NFL’s trade deadline, the Philadelphia Eagles have finally thrown their hat into the trade circle. The Eagles have reportedly acquired New York Jets cornerback Michael Carter II and a 2027 7th-round pick in exchange for a 2027 6th-round pick and wide receiver John Metchie III. Carter will delete the $5M guaranteed for injury in his 2026 contract year to complete the trade.

The Eagles have desperately needed another starting-caliber cornerback alongside Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean this season after letting Darius Slay and Isaiah Rodgers walk in free agency. They brought in Adoree’ Jackson and had him and third-year cornerback Kelee Ringo fight for the other starting outside corner spot alongside Mitchell.

Both players have been given multiple opportunities throughout the season in the starting role, and both have looked atrocious. No matter who was on the field, both players were constantly targeted by opposing teams, and Carter is a clear upgrade.

Through five years in the NFL, Carter has appeared in 65 games, grabbing two interceptions and recording 223 tackles. Carter has primarily played nickel corner in the NFL. While the Eagles already have an outside corner, earlier this week, Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio spoke about the possibility of starter DeJean moving to outside corner.

If DeJean moves outside, he’ll play on the opposite side of the field from Mitchell, and Carter can continue playing nickel, as he has throughout his entire career. Jackorian Bennett is also an option for the outside when he returns from injury, and rookie Mac McWilliams would likely back up Carter.

Carter was drafted in the fifth round of the 2021 draft by former Jets general manager and current Eagles senior personnel director Joe Douglas. Douglas liked Carter so much that he gave him a three-year $30.75 million extension back in 2024, and now helps him find his way to Philadelphia.

This is the second time Metchie has been traded this season, as he was dealt from the Texans to Philadelphia back in August. In seven games with the Eagles, Metchie recorded four catches for 18 yards, spending most of his time with the Eagles playing special teams.
