Refocusing In North Jersey: Eagles-Giants Week 6 Preview
Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley (26) breaks free for a 55-yard gain during the second quarter against the New York Giants, Sunday, Oct. 20, 2024 in East Rutherford, N.J. Andrew Mills | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com
The Eagles head to MetLife on a short week with one job: get back to winning ways and set the tone for the next month.
They are 4-1 after a punch in the mouth loss to Denver on Sunday, and the Giants are 1-4 after coughing up a game in New Orleans, and the lights are bright enough on Thursday night to tell the truth about where both teams are heading.
New York is reshuffling its identity without Malik Nabers, leaning more on tight ends and the run game while rookie Jaxson Dart manages a tight hamstring and adjusts to the speed of the league.
The Eagles have their own bumps. Landon Dickerson didn’t practice and is likely out, and Saquon Barkley has been managing knee soreness, but the core is intact and the standard is clear. This matchup is about urgency, clarity, and cleaning up details that cost the Eagles late in Week 5. If the Eagles play with pace and purpose, this rivalry game becomes a reset, not a trap game.
Cut Off Cam Skattebo, Cut Off Their Plan
The Giants’ offense now runs through rookie back Cam Skattebo and quick decision plays from Dart, which means first down defense dictates everything. Skattebo piled up touches in New Orleans and looked dangerous as a receiver, then put the ball on the ground for a back-breaking red-zone fumble returned 86 yards for a touchdown. His video tells you he plays counter to today’s prototype and invites contact, especially in the flat. I am also an ASU Sun Devil, and I watched him a lot last season, so I can tell you with certainty, when he has a big mistake like he did against the Saints, he plays with an unmatched intensity to make up for it.
It’ll be important to limit the Giants’ early downs with heavy interior movement and rally tackling, especially on Skattebo. He’s averaged 4.4 yards after first contact, so treat every swing and angle route like a punt return and finish with numbers. The Giants pivoted to heavier tight end groupings when Nabers went down, which invites press outside and traffic inside, if the Eagles crowd windows, don’t bite on play action, and keep Dart behind schedule, the Giants will get predictable, and one thing has been made clear this season so far — if you want to see where the ball is going watch Skattebo, even when he’s not running or catching the ball, he’s being used to clear the way.
Win Inside, Make Their Edges Disappear
Brian Burns and Abdul Carter fly off the edge, Dexter Lawrence anchors the middle, and that sounds imposing until you set terms. The Eagles should slide help on clear passing downs, and run directly at the edges to counter their speed. Varying the cadence will be important to help steal first steps and keep tempo after first downs, so New York cannot live in its favorite sub-packages. If Darius Slayton and right tackle Jermaine Eluemunor are limited or out, the Giants have to choose between protecting Dart and threatening downfield; that is a leverage point the Eagles can exploit for the game.
On the other side, this is a Jalen Carter and Jordan Davis game, collapse the pocket, keep rush lanes honest, and force Dart to win from the pocket without scramble space. Do that, and Skattebo becomes a volume back without explosiveness, and third downs will increasingly go the Eagles’ way, and the short week will feel even more difficult for the injury-decimated Giants.
Put The Ball In The Air to Prove Last Week Wasn’t a Fluke
This has to be the night the call sheet frees A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith from the first possession. Slants and quick routes on early downs, quick outs and crossers off play action to beat press coverage. Let’s be clear here: the Giants’ defense is nowhere near as stifling as Denver’s, so there will be more space to play in.
The passing game opened up against Denver, and it proved that the answer is not to wait for shot plays; the answer is to manufacture them and let rhythm build into explosive plays. With Barkley being upgraded to “limited” in practice on Tuesday and likely to play, getting him some running space on his sore knee is incredibly important against his former team.
The Eagles’ offensive personnel invites an aggressive play caller to open it up, and the Giants’ defensive profile is perfect for it. Going back to basics is going to go a long way here. Use motion to force simple answers, get a couple of quick hitters in the passing game early, run the ball to take advantage of loosened linebackers, then use play action to punish over-aggressive edges. Get creative and stretch the field. This was a promising thing to see against Denver, so this week is a chance to really open it up.
It’s imperative that the Eagles play hard for 4 quarters. Letting Denver come from behind like they did is unacceptable. If the Eagles execute from start to finish, Thursday night in North Jersey turns into just another business trip that resets the season’s tone and allows the Eagles to look like themselves again.
Denver exposed the Eagles a bit, but a champion redefines themselves several times in a season and doesn’t get predictable. Nick Sirianni has proven that he can make changes on the fly, and I predict we’ll see this yet again on Thursday.
