Prior to Friday, the Philadelphia Phillies had never won a game at Globe Life Field. Today, they finished off the sweep.
Today’s 4-2 win, however, seemed to be more important than just winning games in Arlington, as the New York Mets lost their seventh straight game after being swept by the Milwaukee Brewers this afternoon. This skid for New York makes the difference now 5.5 games between the Phillies and Mets.
The Phillies climbed their way back after being down two early Sunday, as their bottom-of-the-lineup guys came through and they played rock-solid defense, which is exactly what they did to sweep this weekend’s series.
Concerns Arise for Phillies’ Ace?
Though the Phillies won an excellent game with their ace Zack Wheeler on the mound, there have been recent worries regarding the 35-year-old Cy Young candidate, as he has been allowing more baserunners and throwing a lot more pitches. In today’s start, Wheeler went only five innings, throwing 83 pitches and giving up two earned runs.
Though this is not a bad start at all, the concern comes with his velocity today. Wheeler’s average velocity on the fastball was at 94.2 mph, which is down 2 mph from his season average. In all of Wheeler’s six pitches, each one is down at least 1.8 MPH, with his sinker being the biggest difference, down 2.5 MPH.
With Wheeler not looking as sharp as of late, a tank in velocity is the last thing the Phillies needed as the season continues to wind down and the postseason approaches.
Though a solid start today, this velocity difference will only raise questions and concerns regarding this phenomenal pitching staff.
Defense Shines this Afternoon
With back-to-back excellent catches from the Rangers’ Adolis Garcia and Wyatt Langford, the Phillies’ defense spent the rest of their day putting on a defensive performance of their own, which, looking back, saved the game in many ways.
With infield highlights from Trea Turner and Bryce Harper keeping runners off the bases, it was time for the outfield to make its way on the reel. Perhaps the play that saved the Phillies the most was a home run robbery from the newly acquired Harrison Bader, who kept the lead intact.
Bottom of the Order Comes Through
With some guys in the top of the order having a rough day at the plate, it was up to others to put up some run support for the pitching staff. The Phillies were very successful in that, as most of today’s offense came from the bottom half of the order.
With still being down a run, Edmundo Sosa slugged a solo shot to tie the game at two. It was that same inning, Weston Wilson brought home Bryson Stott with a single up the middle to give the Phillies the lead in the fifth.
To add on, the Phillies took the opportunity to put on insurance in the top half of the ninth inning, with a sacrifice fly from Brandon Marsh to score Bader, after a performance of situational hitting from Sosa and Stott, again.
The Phillies’ ability to perform and come through in these tough situations shows how resilient this team can be when the opportunity arrives for players who don’t usually get their shot.
Duran Goes 4/4
To finish off this series sweep, it was only fair that the newly acquired Jhoan Duran would earn his fourth save in his fourth opportunity in a Phillies uniform.
The Phillies have found the guy they can count on going into the postseason. Sure, Duran may blow a save here or there, but Phillies fans have never felt so confident in their closer in recent years.
The Phillies hope to continue this momentum when they go to Cincinnati for three games.
