Phillies Acquire Kameron Misner From Royals

The Phillies have made a trade for a Royals outfielder, just not the one you expected it to be.
Philadelphia has acquired Kameron Misner from Kansas City in exchange for cash considerations. To get Misner on the 40-man roster, the Phillies have designated outfielder Steward Berroa for assignment. Misner will be optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
Misner, a former first-round pick back in 2019 by the Miami Marlins, spent his first two years of his professional career in the Marlins system before being dealt to the Tampa Bay Rays for Joey Wendle in 2021. He then worked his way through Tampa Bay’s minor league teams over the next two seasons, making it to the Rays Triple-A Durham Bulls for 2023.
In the spring of 2024, Misner fought for one of the Rays’ final roster spots on their opening day roster, but was beaten out and assigned back to Durham to open 2024. Misner finally made his MLB debut on August 2, but in 8 games for Tampa Bay, Misner recorded just one hit, going 1-for-15 (.067) at the plate.
The following spring, Misner was able to find his way onto the Rays’ opening day lineup due to a spring training injury to Richie Palacios. On Opening Day, in the ninth inning in a tied game against the Colorado Rockies, Misner smoked a walk-off home run for the first Major League home run of his career.
Misner would play a total of 71 games that season for the Rays, totaling five home runs and 22 RBIs, with a .213 average. In November, the Rays designated Misner for assignment, dealing him four days later to the Royals for pitcher Matthew Hoskins.
This season, Misner has spent his time up and down from the Royals’ active roster, making 18 appearances this year, totaling just nine hits and four RBIs. Misner was designated for assignment following the Royals’ acquisition of Nate Pearson earlier this week.
While it’s unlikely Misner will even play this season, he creates depth for the Phillies in the outfield department that has been a revolving door this season. From Felix Reyes, Gabriel Rincones Jr, Otto Kemp, Bryan De La Cruz, and Dylan Moore, the Phillies have tried their hands at finding an answer to outfielders for the Phillies bench, with Misner giving them a lefty option.
