With the NHL Draft four days away, the Flyers started the week off hot.
Philadelphia has acquired forward Trevor Zegras from the Ducks in exchange for forward Ryan Poehling, the 45th pick in the 2025 NHL Draft, and a 2026 fourth-round pick.
The Flyers still have three second-round picks this weekend. They also own three first-rounders. They have the assets to trade, and Daniel Briere is putting them to good use.
Zegras is in the final year of a three-year, $17.25 million contract with a $5.75 million cap hit. He will become a restricted free agent next offseason.
The 24-year-old is coming off a 32-point season, including 12 goals and 20 assists, in 57 games. Over the last two years, he had seemed to need a change of scenery. He dealt with a knee injury in the 2024-25 season and had an injury-filled 2023-24 campaign, where he played just 31 games.
The 2019 ninth overall pick gives the Flyers a major boost offensively and down the middle. He also has to prove that his best years on a non-playoff team were not a fluke. The Flyers need him to impact games in various ways.
Zegras had a promising start to his career when he finished as the runner-up for the 2022 Calder Trophy, putting up a rookie season of 61 points with 23 goals and 38 assists in 75 games. He followed it up with a career-high 65 points with 23 goals and 42 assists in 81 games in 2022-23.
The talent is there; now he just needs to release it again in Philadelphia.
Poehling was entering the second year of a two-year, $3.8 million deal, with a $1.9 million cap hit. He will be an unrestricted free agent next offseason.
The 26-year-old recorded career highs in goals (12) and assists (19) over 68 games last season. He missed some time due to a head injury. The Flyers could eventually replace Poehling’s speed with 2024 first-rounder Jett Luchanko, or Briere could make some more moves.
