Mets Bats Take Over the Bank — Phillies and Mets Trade Blowouts to Even Series at 1 Apiece

In Saturday night’s bloodbath between the New York Mets and the Philadelphia Phillies, the Mets had no problem jumping Phillies pitching, with 15 hits to show for. Throughout the game, the Mets’ lineup continued to make the Phillies look lost, as there continued to be no answer for the combination of hits tonight.
Not only did the Mets have 15 hits, but they hit seven solo home runs, tying the all-time record and beating the Phillies 11-4, leading to a rubber match for the division lead Sunday night.
A decent effort from the Phillies’ lineup to start the game appeared to have tired out as a result of the Mets’ domination tonight. The offense, which had a 3-1 lead early in the game, became helpless as the bats became silent fast.
Though having had good starts, Mick Abel seemed to struggle tonight against an offense of experience in the New York Mets. In three innings pitched, Abel threw 73 pitches while giving up four runs with only one strikeout. In a young player’s career, he will have these kinds of starts, but this was a crucial moment in the season to have a bad start.
Bullpen Struggles Continue
Though it was a rough night for the Phillies’ offense, the bullpen was not able to keep the Phillies in the ballgame after a frustrating start from the young Abel, who only pitched three innings for the Phillies tonight.
Joe Ross, who has not performed very well this season, did not help the Phillies’ case, as he gave up three more runs to the Mets in two and two-thirds innings pitched. Before the damage was done to Ross, the game was still close, as it was only a one-run game.
Michael Mercado, who had not seen much of the field this year, made matters even worse as he gave up three more runs in his inning, which officially left the Phillies hopeless.
For the finishing touch, Francisco Alvarez, who had three home runs prior to tonight, took Taijuan Walker yard for 452 feet. Walker has given up three home runs in two back-to-back nights to his former club.
Lack of Power
The Phillies’ lineup, which scored ten runs in Friday night’s win over New York, went quiet as they watched the Mets’ bats fly. Certain stars were unable to make solid contact as the game continued to progress.
Though the Phillies had eight hits, there was no production that came out of players such as Trea Turner and Bryson Stott, as they went hitless tonight.
The Phillies did not slug tonight, even with eight hits. They did not leave the yard or compile hits with runners in scoring position. These issues are not the reason the Phillies lost the game, obviously, but it looks like a disappointing performance.
Phillies Unable to Hold Mets’ Lineup
The Mets’ lineup, which had struggled during their seven-game losing streak, continued to rack up hits against the Phillies tonight.
Mets such as Francisco Lindor, Brandon Nimmo, Pete Alonso, and Alvarez each had two hits for themselves, and Juan Soto, who is having a season to forget, had four hits, two of them being home runs.
Tonight, this Mets lineup took advantage of the Phillies’ struggling bullpen and added on damage to the Phillies, making the game out of reach for Philadelphia.
First Place up for Grabs
The Phillies wrap up their series on national television tomorrow on ESPN at 7. With the Phillies and the Mets tied for first in the National League East coming into the series, they remain tied for first as the series is split going into game three tomorrow.
Jesus Luzardo makes the start for the Phillies against the Mets’ David Peterson, who is having an incredible season for the Mets. The winner of tomorrow’s game will take first place in the NL East.
