Report: Phillies “Locking In” On Cedric Mullins Trade

The Phillies in recent history haven’t been too keen on messing with team chemistry over the last few seasons, they’re all about adding where they need without messing with the locker room too much.
Just like last season, they are reportedly eyeing a Baltimore Orioles outfielder, this time Cedric Mullins, as a trade target to bolster their outfield for a postseason push, according to several sources. The Phils appeared to have some interest in Mullins, which started at the World Baseball Classic a few years back, according to Alex Coll of SportsRadio 94 WIP.
Mullins, a former All-Star, has been struggling a bit this season, as is evident by his slash line, .226/.320/.446, with 10 home runs and 31 RBI so far this season. This seems a bit low, but given the team around him, this would only improve if he were put in the Phils’ lineup.
Defensively, Mullins hasn’t been the same, looking like he may have lost a step, but there is one very important thing: there won’t be defensive miscues from him in center as we have seen from Johan Rojas earlier in the season.
Adding Mullins to the Phillies’ roster would enhance an already potent outfield that includes Rojas, Nick Castellanos, Brandon Marsh, and Max Kepler. Of course, one of them would presumably be moved in this deal. Mullins’ speed and defensive capabilities would allow Marsh to shift to a corner outfield spot, providing flexibility and depth.
Getting Mullins won’t likely cost the Phils any top-level prospects, given he’s going into free agency this offseason. His affordable $8.73 million salary and the Orioles’ potential interest in rebuilding, this trade scenario appears like a potential win for both teams. This trade definitely moves the needle more than last year’s trade of Austin Hays from Baltimore last season.
The only other aspect of the team that is in any need of being addressed is the bullpen, punctuated by the suspension of Jose Alvarado, There are also talks of the Phils kicking the tires on a trade for the Orioles Felix Bautista — opening up a package deal possibly — as well as the St. Louis Cardinals electric closer Ryan Helsley, both of which would be a solid addition to the bullpen. Though there are more suitors for Helsley, meaning the hail will have to be stronger than what the likes of the Texas Rangers and Los Angeles Dodgers can give back.
